When is a Schooner not a Schooner and when is a Pot a Middie?

Absolutely nothing wrong with cl. and is used quite a lot in europe. centilitres, decilitres , dekalitres et are all valid in the metric system. If using SI units then should only use cubic metres for volume

The US use c quite correctly in its US/Imperial use for 100 ( such as in cwt for hundredweight )

Dave

While technically correct it is an offense to any right minded person. ;)

Use for cwt and cm makes sense because it is a natural 100 based system. I often see it used as cGy or maybe even cSv (or maybe not) by USA-ites. They do this because the conversion from us units to SI units is based on 100 as well. But it just isn't how the rest of the world express those SI units. Preferring to stick with the factor of 1000. So it causes great brain strain.

I thought the litre is also an SI unit.

No, the SI unit for volume is cubic metre. The metric system has graduations in 10s such as milliX, centiX,deciX, X , dekaX,hectoX,kiloX etc where each is 10 times the 1 prior

All are perfectly reasonable to use

Yes but beyond milli and kilo there are no 10 increments. While acceptable, in fact I'll agree on acceptable but not reasonable, the terms only have limited applicability. At least scientifically, I know I would have had major corrections for using the terms in my masters.

Well really it just offends my sensibilities. ;)

BTW, wiki answer says that the litre is official defined as dm^3. Well there I go.

Indeed. a litre is a decimetre^3 ( yup, that nice deci prefix :) ) though the SI unit is the metre^3 as would be expected gven that the SI unit of length is a metre and unit of area is metre^2

I guess you don't mean to say "though" though as a deci-metre^3 is in SI units. With the prefix just defining the multiplier.

I guess some allowance must be made between scientific purity of measurement and the unaccommodating reality of the physical world.

Lets just say a centi-litre of water weighs 1 gram and a litre of water weighs 1 Kg.

Of course a centi-litre or gram of water in cubic shape has each side being 1 cm in length. Also, a litre or Kg of water in cubic shape has each side being 1 deci-metre in length.

Don't know, but I have bought it by the 'yard' before...

There's a pub in Prague IIRC that everyone sits around the tap and pours beers to their hearts content, then pays the final Litre reading at the end of the session :p

I went to a pub like that in Melbourne in 1999. I thought it was in flinders lane but I haven't been able to find it since :(

Maybe a premature attack of senility :!:

I could blame both the demon drink and senility.
I was new in town so I did a walking tour of CBD watering holes. The place in question was about 2nd on the list. So I walked out of there knowing exactly where to find it. Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said at 1am the next morning when I staggered out of another somewhere to/in the south west of the city after enjoying a quiet drink listening to a Japanese death metal band*

So yes drink impairment and early onset senility caused by listing to Japanese death metal bands. ;)

* I think it was death metal could have been punk. Either way it was unusual enough that I remembered them a few years ago when they made rage or triplej
