I had a friend over to mine the other day and we were talking about International flying experiences, My friend has done about 90 international flights in the last couple of years and whilst I have done nowhere near that we have both had similar experiences.

It maybe complete rubbish (and im sure you will all tell me if it is) , but we both agreed that we have never sat next to passengers of the same age. Im in my late 20s and mainly travel PE or Y internationally and much the same for my mate. I am thinking that thier maybe an algorithm in the seating/booking system that doesnt seat young professionals together. I can only hypothesis that it might be to stop them making friends and getting drunk on the flights etc..

Am i on to something? I had a friend over to mine the other day and we were talking about International flying experiences, my friend has done about 90 international flights in the last couple of years and whilst I have done nowhere near that, we have both had similar experiences.

Just a co-incidence I think.

If not, then every seating system for every airline has conspired against me sitting next to that pretty young thing that always walks past my row, leaving me wondering "what if?" :(

Did a ski trip with 8 friends over to Japan quite a few years back. The ride over was pretty raucous, they actually refused any further alcohol service. A couple of passengers (who in fact WERE of the same age and demographic) were getting stuck into us to shut up and stop standing around in the aisles. Anyway on the return journey we were all seperated. Only margininally slowed us down! :)

My seat mate is usually either no one (a silver shadow perhaps?) or a person of random age and gender with no real pattern to it.

Any algorithms to group pax by anything other than bookings / giving higher tiered pax the better seats would be both expensive to write and bring no great value to the airline.

Of course the question could be asked of both you and your mate, given the number of flights, it is probable that you are both higher tier in the FF programs, which mean you get first pick of the seats. Younger people in general don't often get any FF status. Within my own group of friends (excluding friends I'd met via AFF) I am only aware of two others who have any sort of status. As such most of my late 20, early 30's friends would be relegated down to the back of the bus more often than not.

I expect if you want to be sitting next to that hot girl in her late 20's who just walked by, you'd probably need to start picking the less than fantastic seats.

I'd suggest my seat mates have been a general assortment of people of all ages.

When travelling alone, my seatmates tend to vary between a shadow (preferred of course), businessmen/women in suits, and well-dressed QF staff on subload (I always spot the crew bags)... In almost all cases, the pax are older than me (I'm 22). Domestically, I suspect this has more to do with sitting in row 4/23 and the type of passengers that can usually select seats there at the time of booking (P1 & CL), along with their respective PCVs (which naturally favour business/high-yield customers), as opposed to any type of passenger age sorting system. I'm sure if I were to venture further back, I'd encounter more people around my age (eg. from row 19 on a 737). The exception to the rule happened on a MEL-BNE... I was in 4D, shadow in 4E, and an absolutely gorgeous ~20y/o blonde in 4F (no status - glanced at the BP when she put it on the seat between us). Naturally I didn't try anything (not sure my gf would approve :p), but I'm sure a number of pax would have loved to play musical chairs on that flight...

I don't do much solo international travel (I'd much rather have company), though when I have travelled alone, I've had a shadow all but once - when a subload pax was loaded just before the flight closed.

On all other flights, my gf is beside me (or occasionally other family members) :)

I wonder if they will ever incorporate facebook into the seating algorithm, people with the same "likes" get to sit next to each other.

My biggest fear would be sitting next to a few from this forum.

most of my INT travel since I was 21 has been J and noticed that I am usually one of the younger people except, for when SWMBO is next to me as she is 1 year younger :). As people these days choose their own seats I think your seat mate is very random.

Mrs Lime and self seated next to a guy from Cairns on trip to OOL, his wife was seated on other side of aisle, both around same age, since we have become very good friends and go out to dinner couple times a month as we really enjoy their company.

Well yesterday on the MEL-CBR flight I was seated near a middle aged white male, with our shadow between us we could've been twins.

Although he looked down his nose very slightly at me because I was in shorts and t-shirt in row 4 and was spoken to by the FA just as he was.

Sadly, the gorgeous single women must have a seating app to avoid me. ;)

Generally no. My understanding is that there isn't a higher proportion of WPs in my age bracket (<30) and if so, they may not be sitting in EC as often as I am (which is not that often in the grand scheme of things).
Then again those around me may not necessarily be WPs, was on a trans-Tasman flight yesterday in 4D, shadow in 4E and middle aged man in 4F - I got an express pass from the CSM and he didn't. The lady in 5E did seem to get some sort of nicer treatment (pre-takeoff J bubbly and NC earphones) so I'm guessing she was P1/CL or similar.

I've been on a few flights with AFFer's... They are about the most fun flights you'll ever be on... Trust me on that one... :D
(excluding flights where you find out after the fact that other AFFers where actually on that flight, it's happened a couple of times, even sat near each other in the lounge in one instance and didn't know it :()

Does sound like a big coincidence to me! If I think back over the last two years, had anything from friendly old gentlemen to drunk old ba+$%rds and then again a lovely young lady as well as a hot young guy. Everything really, luckily rarely families with screeching children up the front

Without a doubt. Waiting to board a Q to Bris yesterday morning, an overweight suited chap came bowling past with both Q and DJ Plat tags proclaiming loudly "I hate 737s - probably have to sit next to some idiot or other". He was completely serious and I was so thankful he wasn't anywhere near me. I had an window exit and had to put up with a gangly chap (certainly of my age) who shouldered me all flight, but since is he was middle I naturally gave him his way. I think I'd rather tall seat mates than fat ones.

haha, you wouldn't like sitting next to me, I'm 6ft9in and 180kg.

That being said I always fly J/F, and usually choose the A332/A333. But over the last week, my two flights were on old 767s (747 and A333 Equipment change fml), and the seats are just horrible in comparison to the space you get with a skybed.

And no, the only time i've sat next to someone near my age, is in economy, where a really hot russian (looking) blonde girl was seated next to me, but she curled up and went to sleep pretty quickly. (I tried not to stare hahahaha)

and FYI I am 24yo.
