as a truck driver part of my pre start work check is to have zero loose items in the truck cab in case of roll over in accident as flying objects can cause injuries.

Makes we wander what 100 portable IFE devices like the one on jet* would so in a severe case of turbulence.

On the many flights I've been on severe turbulence is fortunately rare but I have to say when it has occurred I have never seen/heard the FA's make an announcement or collect portable IFE.

Valid post.. just had a flight recently on Scoot where the FAs' handed out the coughbersome Ipad2 in lieu of the missing seat back IFE.. Was considering the same scenario of turbulence.. The Ipads could & would become a dangerous object flung around the cabin.

Not overly alarmed, though have been on previous flights with clear air & severe turbulence, & have observed any loose objects - (including unrestrained persons) get easily thrown around the cabin.

Most passengers don't realise that it can happen at any time.. I am always prepared & generally am seated with my seat belt loosely fastened.. just in case.

The only thing I have seen is the seat belt light goes on and put up tray tables.

On a J* flight we got some turbulence and they just said put up tray tables and seat belts on but never a question of bringing in IFE

Presumably back in the seat pocket they came from (for QF 767s).

The Virgin digiplayers would pack a fair punch if flying about.

But no worse than the meal trays, galley carts, laptops, hardcover books that are there today.

Unlike trucks aircraft tend not to roll and if they come to a sudden stop as a result of turbulence then a flying iPad is the least of your concerns.

In turbulence aircraft tend to go up and down mostly with some jiggle side to side. An unrestrained ipad would go up and then come down again - much like the red wine did all over my PJs.

I dont think in turbulence there is an issue any more than the unrestrained 90 kilo pax...
