Well i'm doing several new countries every year on my own, now up to 40 with a few more to be visited this year, one of which should be Russia with its underground metro stations....

But i took my 6 year old up to Bali (yes you know, bogan central and all that) last year and he got to swim with some dolphins, stroke them and interact.. Just got back from another week up there and this time took him to Bali Zoo, bird park, butterfly park, reptile park, monkey forest, rice terraces and took him to show him a vlocano but by then rain clouds had come in and couldn't see much... So he got to hold lots of animals and insects that he might not have seen here, or certainly got to hold... So lots of nice memories being built up along with restaurants to eat at and flights and waterbom park and swims in pool without any 2nd mortgages needing to be taken out...

Next i might take him to Singapore or perhaps one of the pacific islands... After seeing so many animals he did say he wanted to be an animal trainer, so anything that helps concentrate his mind on becoming something sounds good to me.... As he gets older and can rough it a bit more and retain the memories i will probably take him to Africa to see some of the big 5 etc... I'm not personally one for art galleries all that much but i'm sure he would love some of the natural history and science museums in Wash DC, NYC, London and a few other places... But will probably save that for when he is in double figures...

Taking a four year old to see the Great Wall of China will probably leave them with a memory of it as "I had an ice cream".

When I was a kid, after 8 week world trip (including London):

Dad: "In which city does the Queen live?"
8yo brother: "I know - Devonport!*"

*City of about 25,000 people, about 200km from home, which we didn't even pass through on the way!

For us it is about getting boygr to just understand that there is a world outside of Sydney, that having a passport and using it is not strange - it's normal, that thinking working overseas is not a big deal, that an eight hour flight is a short trip and most importantly that he doesn't love anyone enough to fly long haul in economy (and he understands his parents feel the same).

I can't wait until boygr is old enough to dive properly and I can foresee some dad/son trips to liveaboards whilst mrssimongr spends a few days at the spa and (unfortunately) a few days at [insert local expensive shopping mall].

We've taken our children to Asia many times, including Sri Lanka. Bali is bogan and beautiful, you've just got to know where to go. My son aged five months caught giardia from the water on Hamilton Island, even though it had been boiled. I remember our medicinal "just in case" bag weighed more than clothing. But now they're adults there beat memories are holidays.

Well, as our daughter is too young to dive, dive destinations are out of the question. That said, as soon as she's old enough we're back in!

I would like to see some of the WW2 (where my grandfather fought) or 'Nam destinations, but again, will wait until she is old enough to know the history.

But, there are many places to see. Just got to keep your wits about you when travelling to those white-slavery places. And, when travelling with kids, they need to be supervised, not leave them sleeping in the room while you lounge by the pool or in the bar. Kidnapping is very real. That's why it's called KIDnapping.
