...locally, in Sydney or duty free in SYD/SIN?

( A branded watch, like Seiko or Citizen.)

You could find a watch you like, locally and keep a sales person in a job. Then do a TRS on the way to SIN, to keep them in a job. You will have what you want, local store to go back to and saved the money as well;)

I bought my last watch in Singapore (mont blanc) and claimed the tax back at the airport. Significantly le$$ than au and on par with US prices.

Forget Australia if you are spending over 1000

Watches are regularly on sale at jewelers in Australia. Often discounts of up to (and sometime over) 50% for the brands you mention. So its most unlikely that a SYD airport duty-free show is going to be cheaper than a local shopping mall jeweler having a sale. I bought my daughter's birthday present watch last night and it was 50% of normal price at one of the jeweler chains in a local mall. Its been a few years since I went watch shopping in Australia and I was surprised at how competition seems to have driven prices down. Even the designer brands (like Guess, Jag, etc) were a lot cheaper and mostly on sale at all the places we looked, which quite surprised me.

Remember that Duty-Free does not mean Profit-Free.

Are you a politician? :D
No - about to be a redundant, unemployed manufactuing worker.... and no offense taken.
If they get some more work they might keep me on for a little while longer. but we dont make watches.

I bought my last Longines watch in Australia, $3,500. I wanted to be sure that if there was ever a problem i would have somewhere to go locally.

As it turns out the watch stopped unexpectedly and was replaced immediately by the Jeweller!

You do get international warranties and all that other cods wallop but at the end of the day it's nice to be able to speak to your local jeweller/watch supplier about the watch you bought from them!

It's also easier to insure here!

For the quoted brands, there should be no particular discussion needed IMHO.

But for high end watches, I had good experience at Watches of Switzerland located at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney.

In my case, the duty free price was the same as an internet deal from Switzerland, plus the original warranty.

My watch had to be ordered in taking some 3 months' waiting but I was happy with that considering it was released only some six months earlier.

Knowing a couple of people who buy high-end watches (IWS, Rolex etc), they all swear by Hong Kong.

I found the watch I was searching for (in Aus $1k), online in a sale in US for $200.
Was just lucky with that one.

Looking at new watches, the Hour Glass on Collins st in Melbourne is good, if you want an antique/second hand watch, The Watch Gallery in Little Collins street has a fantastic collection.

Have a browse in here...rolexforums.com. There are plenty of wonderful watches for sale, not just Rolex's plus a forum to ask questions on all brands.

I bought my Seiko from Prouds at the local shopping mall and claimed the GST back on the way to SIN. It was a sale price and on a par with anything I have seen elsewhere

Commiserations. I just got made redundant, but a reasonable payout, and some interest shown in me already. Good luck to you.

That sounds like what my plan will be. I just wanted a watch for every day use.

I purchased my current watch at HKG (the actual terminal) have no idea if the price was good.....I was in a good mood & the attendant was really nice:!: 9 years later its still going strong & looks good:cool:

The watch or the attendant? (Still going strong lol) ;)

My two sons think watches are for old people.
They just have their cell phones.
Meanwhile we buy fashion watches with Swiss movements so they don't cost too much. The rose gold finish looks sweet on a lady. I bought that one at Bloomingdales in Los Angeles on a weekend sale for a special lady.
