Vanuatu has suffered a catastrophic event overnight, I am in no way wanting to make it seem that this is easily dismissed. I feel terrible for the beautiful island nation and its people.

We were to leave on a short break to Vanuatu on 26 March, this will no longer be possible. We would still like to do something and for fun I thought I would ask AFFers for their suggestions.

Thanks in advance
Fiona

Tassie in Autumn - magic!

Tassie would be great for me, but my travelling companion spent several weeks touring there last year.

I am actually a bit stumped as the where to go and we will probably not go anywhere. While I can think of plenty of places I would like to visit and experiences I would love to have, my travelling companion (and the person paying) doesn't have the same desires. As long as a plane is involved I'm happy :)

I thought of Uluru, but she has been there 3 years ago and has no interest in returning, I went 16 years ago and would love to revisit.

If you are looking for warm humid weather and a nice beach there is always Broome. Hotels are quite cheap in Broome until the end of March.

I like that idea, I wonder if she would be interested hmmm, I have a sneaking suspicion that is will be 'too far'

Have you been told by the airline / hotel that you shouldn't come? After a natural disaster, often the best thing you can do for the local is to keep going there and spending money - provided it's safe of course!

Perhaps some place slightly obscure like Kangaroo Island. You'll be too later for this particular festival, but could be a good place to visit. ... Kangaroo Island Feastival: A tasty visual and culinary treat

And, in late March Canberra is staring to look lovely with the autumn colours and there are many things to see in CBR.

Or, are there seats available for Lord Howe Island?

Thanks for the ideas. Cyclone Nathan is now predicted to strengthen over the next few days and turn back towards queensland which sort of rules it out of our plans for now.

Mother nature is playing with us humans at the moment.

I like all these suggestions. I wish it was up to me I would put them in a hat and pull one out. I just love to travel :)

Just to round off this thread.

We didn't end up going anywhere in March, but we are now heading to Perth and Broome in July. I will be doing a quick trip from NTL, 2nts Perth, 3nts Broome, and my dear friend will continue on without me on a cruise from Broome to Darwin.

Thanks for all the suggestions... and Broome is the winner, although not in March.

Good choice, although I think you could have found quite a lot to do in the BME environs that would have made a longer trip really worth well. Going up to the horizontal falls, even if only flying over it is great.

We've changed to 4nts Broome, 1nt Perth (some business to attend to in Perth). By good luck we are in Broome for the July full moon which is something I have always wanted to see.

It is very impressive. You need a good camera though and a tripod can also help. I took these pictures 2 years ago. I was there again in April, but it was cloudy...
