I have (sort of) followed the discussion of the QF LTG members as they speculate on what is the best strategy for them as they continue to fly. With the recent changes to the AA program, attaining AA LTG or other million miler status now appear to be a young persons goal. To explain simply, everyone gets one mile added to their total for 1 EQM earned in the AA program. No bonuses for credit card spend, status miles or class of service. Hence in retirement, I have no expectation (short of a Lotto long shot) of ever seeing another million mile marker with AA.
And with AA no longer providing a "soft landing" from one year to the next
, and with a major difference in status bonus for AA Plt versus Gld I came to wonder if another program might offer some benefits. Certainly if the AA award costs are increased (as speculated by some), the need to review where to maintain status will become even more important.
CX - I do travel SEAsia and to the USA, so the benefits of CX Silver in HKG look better and better as paid flying is reduced. And it seems CX Silver has better support than partner FFers at OW Sapphire. This works much better for PER than the eastern cities.
QF - OTOH, the inexpensive CX TransPacific J cabin fares (if you know where to find them) and the random KUP fare on AA (see USA trips above) would seem to permit QF SG to be more of a problem of 4 ~ than not having enough SC.
BA - Y+ from SIN to PER via SYD isn't all that much more $$ than QF fully flex direct. So 4 BA flights seem possible. Are there enough benefits to warrant finding 600 tier points?
MH/UL - Intra Asia economy flights that earn qualifying flights seem less expensive on MH and Europe on UL in J seems priced well, so what are the thoughts at the OW Sapphire level with these two? Please UL start CMB-PER.
Some of the answers might be of interest to QF LTGers, but the two positions I think are very different.
Discuss in earnest, and please wander as much as needed.
