I have some regional travel over the next few weeks and have opted to stay at PCH hotels everywhere except Mackay, where there appears to be no loyalty chain hotels. Anyone have any recommendations?

Any of the motels on Nebo Road are more than satisfactory. I am guessing work is paying/booking for you but rates are a little higher in Mackay and if you call motel directly you may be able to get a nice discount on published rate.

I second Nebo Rd which is the main road into Mackay from the south and near the airport. There are dozens of places. Just look for one that has a few cars parked in the car ports to show people are staying there. (My parents were in the Motel business on the Gold Coast for many years and it was one of the tricks to encourage people to at least appear interested]. It won't be cheap due to the miners who work in the mines and spend a few days in the city. Top of the range hotels will cost and not at all worth what they ask.

I was transferred to Mackay many years ago and housing was difficult to get even then. I can't recommend any particular place, but check Nebo Rd hotels on Tripadvisor as well as the usual sites, and use a grain of salt with over the top and whinging reports. A car is definitely necessary.

Am thinking of spending a week or so up there later in the year myself. It's a lovely area.

The problem with Nebo road can be the noise-it is the highway.
The Marina is the nicest place-except on Fridays and weekends when it is party time at the bar.Several restaurants there. Will need a car here.
In town I have stayed at the Quest apartments and they are reasonable.
It is a mining town so prices are high for accom and restaurants.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I'll have another look online today. I have stayed at one place in the past because it was one of the qantas earn miles hotel, but it was in the middle if nowhere and was very ordinary for the price.

I agree Nebo Rd options are noisy, I generally stay at the Ocean International which is OK and quiet. Don't stay at the place just to the South which happens to be under the flight path on the beach.

Nebo road is where all the motels are...There is a few motels along there that are a bit dodgey but if they are under $100 that will be the sign.Ocean international is very nice and the marina is all nice.Dj FA's stay at the marina or if they don't now they use to.QF FA's stay at ocean international or if they don't they use to.

As are most of the places on Nebo Rd when they come in from the North west.

Quite true, although the predominant anabatic wind in the morning means the noise of the departing aircraft (x3) at 20 feet over your roof at 6.45 as they turn left on departure tends to be annoying! By comparison the first arrival allows for a sleep in until 8.20!

Ok so I'm staying at Ocean International which turns out is the same place I stayed last time haha they updated their website and I didn't realise..

At least it isn't show day this time around, so I should be able to grab something to eat at/around the Marina

The restaurant used to be really good at the Ocean, have not stayed there for a few years now so maybe not anymore, it used to fill with QF link crew before the Orange invasion took over.

Yeah I had room service there last time because I couldn't be bothered eating by myself in the restaurant, I'll stick my head in tonight after I finish work and suss it out
