Well I added a 4 night stop over in Paris for my trip in October but I know nothing about Paris so where do I and + 1 start, can you recomend some good hotels that would meet the tourist needs.

I asked the same of Hong Kong last year and the recommendations here made the trip just perfect.

Thanks

Allan

The first time in Paris is wonderful if that is the case for you. The range is endless. Do you have a price range and any hotel chain loyalty?

have to agree with the turtle, your first trip to Paris is wonderful. We stayed at Royal Magda Etoile which is just around the corner from the Arc de Triomphe. Tiny rooms, but great location and price. It is reported in Trip Advisor.

Make sure you buy advance tickets to go up Eiffel tour - we used viator.com The queues were horrendous but we simply met at the agreed time, and walked straight past everyone in the queue. And make sure you go to the very top if it is open! And climb the Arc de Triomphe at nightime to see the Eiffel Tower all lit up.

Paris is awesome, have stayed at the Tryp de Saxe a few times, close to the tower and a metro. Quite reasonably ($130au queen room) prices for a large confortable room.

Budget: IBIS De La Tour Eiffel. If lucky you can gain a room with a good view of the Eiffel Tower. When I stayed there and the check-in guy was a Pakistani and when I presented my Australian Passport, his first words were "Ricky Ponting" -> Instant room with a view.

+1 for seeking accom recos for Paris - will be visiting Pais for first time in July.

Hilton Diamond if that helps - bigger room preferred - not constrained by budget but don't like tipping it down the drain either.

Agree i like to keep it under $500 night. Can be tricky in places however that's where status comes into play with upgrades.

I want a room for about $250 to $350 pn if I can get it preferably with a balcony and a view. Not sure if its doable but overlooking the tower would be nice. I dont khow Paris at all so I have no idea what is whare.

Have been to Paris quite a few times. Have stayed in all price ranges & enjoyed all of them......the last one was an apartment for 7 nights over 2011 NY period. TBH the apartment life wasn't my cup of tea......although the apartment was exceptional.

Anyway, over the years we've stayed at three hotels along this street rue jacob paris - Google Maps great spot, particular the Rue de Seine end.

Have used this apartment booking service & can vouch for them Paris Luxury Apartments: Rent Paris Apartment, Luxe in Paris, Paris Apartment is boutique selection of Luxury Vacation Apartments in Paris, France.

However, the spot we will be returning is here Relais Christine - Charming hotel in the heart of Paris

Enjoy your trip.

Hotel des Grandes Hommes was a fantastic hotel for me (stayed 7 nights). Overlooking the Pantheon from the side and only a minute walk from Rue Moufettard (a great little street to walk along). Paid around $150 pn for a single room with an early booking discount (so I assume a double will be in or close to your bracket). Had a 'balcony' (which was basically just a little ledge but about par for Paris). It's on the edge of the St Germain and Latin (my favourite) quarter. Staff fantastic...was mothered the one day I had a fever (they actually went to a chemist to get me some medication!). Its currently ranked 36th of 1824 hotels on TA website, which is a very good effort and imo justified.

However if you are going to focus on the popular tourist stuff (which is not my style), then probably can find a hotel in a better location.

FWIW we stayed at the Grand Hotel Francais, 223 Boulevard Voltaire, 11 Bastille Republique. As the name suggests it is near the Bastille. It is only a small hotel and, like nearly all Paris hotels, the room was small. We are usually 4 star people and this was probably 3 star but it ticked the boxes for us. The bathroom was new and very clean with a good shower (sometimes lacking in Paris). The variety of cereals, eggs, hot drinks etc for breakfast was a good start to the day. If you want a hotel where you can sit in a bar or lobby all day then this won't suit but for us a hotel is just somewhere to sleep and leave our cases. Price was around $AUD210 p/n - end of 2011.

We found the location perfect for us - a very short walk to the rail station ("Nation" I think it was called) which gave excellent access to all areas of Paris, there was a coin laundry only a few doors away, and a supermarket right across from the station which we used around 10pm a couple of nights, after sightseeing all day, to buy fabulous fresh bread sticks, cheeses and salami and wine etc - all at much cheaper prices than Melbourne. Plenty of restaurants a short walk away and the other benefit was that it was a very safe area to walk around any time of night or day.

I think Paris is the only city in the world where baguettes, cheese and sliced meats makes a perfect dinner.

We've done quote a few trips to Paris and getting a room 'with a view', IMHO, is a little enthusiastic and costs lots more than a 'nice room'. All you have to do is leave the room to have a fantasic view of Paris:)

French hotel rooms, unless you pay heaps are quite small and it seems that if one adds the view one tends to reduce the room size further.

I like the Paris arrondissements around the 5-7th for charm and there are a number of lovely hotels, L'Hotel, Relais Christine, Le Regent, L'Hotel, and others around rue ancient comedie and rue dauphine. However this year when we spent Xmas in Paris with friends who had rented apartment in the 2nd on Bvld Sevastopol, we stayed in the 2nd at the Novotel Les Halles (Accor group and good if you have taken advantage of the free Platinum membership discussed elsewhere on AFF) in one of their 'superior or queen executive suites'. Novotels are not luxurious by any means but this was well priced and a nice two room area with good bathroom, good beds, nespresso machine and a wonderful view of the building works at Les Halles.:) The area is not as romantic as the 5-7th however the position was excellent. Very close walking distance to Notre Dame, The Louvre, George Pompidou Centre (incl their lovely restaurant with one of the best views in Paris for lunch!), the food areas of Les Marais and many other places. Plus it's next to Chatalet-Les Halles RER and Metro. (Taxis in Paris are cheap at E10 per trip and you see more.)

An alternative to consider maybe the starwood property - The Westin (The Westin Paris - Vendôme | Official Site | Best Rate Guaranteed) in the 1st (3 rue de Castiglione - 75001) near Place Vendôme. This is closer to the Louvre and Place de la Concorde. This is a very nice hotel and does have rooms with views. (Nice restaurant with 20% starwood discounts).

If you do make the trip, make it a point to book well in advance for lunch at 2* L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon in the 7th, not far from Musee D'Orsay. We went twice for lunch - some of the best food I've ever eaten in my life.

Last there we stayed in Sofitel Arc de Triomphe, which was reasonable and in a good location. We did splurge for two nights at Hotel de Crillon, at Place de la Concorde. You need deepish pockets there....;)
