+1 for seeking accom recos for Paris - will be visiting Pais for first time in July.

Hilton Diamond if that helps - bigger room preferred - not constrained by budget but don't like tipping it down the drain either.

I'm a Hyatt Diamond as well, I'm staying at the Hyatt Regency Paris - Madeleine for five nights in February - 2 nights are paid and 3 nights using points. The paid nights are €370 per night.

I will keep you posted on perks for Diamond etc. I tried to use points at the Vendome, but there wasn't any availability.

Edit - just realised that you are a Hilton Diamond, not Hyatt Diamond

FWIW we stayed at the Grand Hotel Francais, 223 Boulevard Voltaire, 11 Bastille Republique. As the name suggests it is near the Bastille. It is only a small hotel and, like nearly all Paris hotels, the room was small. We are usually 4 star people and this was probably 3 star but it ticked the boxes for us. The bathroom was new and very clean with a good shower (sometimes lacking in Paris). The variety of cereals, eggs, hot drinks etc for breakfast was a good start to the day. If you want a hotel where you can sit in a bar or lobby all day then this won't suit but for us a hotel is just somewhere to sleep and leave our cases. Price was around $AUD210 p/n - end of 2011.

We found the location perfect for us - a very short walk to the rail station ("Nation" I think it was called) which gave excellent access to all areas of Paris, there was a coin laundry only a few doors away, and a supermarket right across from the station which we used around 10pm a couple of nights, after sightseeing all day, to buy fabulous fresh bread sticks, cheeses and salami and wine etc - all at much cheaper prices than Melbourne. Plenty of restaurants a short walk away and the other benefit was that it was a very safe area to walk around any time of night or day.

I can endorse that. We stayed there a few years ago (it has since changed ownership) but had friends stay there last November and we visited them at the hotel. We. and they, had one of the relatively spacious rooms on the corner overlooking Voltaire. It's a good hotel for the price. The nearest metro is Rue des Boulets about 50 metres away. Nation is a bit further. The hotel is within easy walking distance of a number of good restaurants including Septime in Rue de Charonne.

Thanks everyone I looked at the recommendations here and on the older similar thread and I have gone with Hotel La Regence Etoile 740 Euro including breakfast for four nights. Looks a nice location, nice hotel and well priced.

Always a great help as usual on here, thanks again.

Looks like a nice choice. It's a little out of the way though... But you'll love Paris whererever you are!

ps: my current avatar (penguin) is from the Galeries Lafayette http://retaildesignblog.net/2012/11/28/galeries-lafayette-holiday-windows-2012-paris/ and le Printemps department store on Bvld Housmann last Xmas. Printemps Department Store Paris : Core Values - Store Windows

pps: If you are in Paris, and have an iPhone and open Apple Maps, it's amusing if you ask it to find 'Galeries Lafayette'. LOL!

Last time I stayed in the fab Hotel Splendid Etoile. From our wonderful large balcony view we could literally touch the Arc De Triomphe..room size was large, beds and pillows fantastic quality...5 min walk to Champs Elysses
Highly recommended

Thanks to all posters - fabulous info - need to book 6 nights Jul 3 to 9 - keep the suggestions coming please.

Any knowledge of this hotel? http://www.lutetia-paris.com/en/?

Have heard stories that this is where Gestapo was stumped up during WW2 - I'm thinking they kinda had a choice of whichever hotel they desired.
