Which full service airline, if any, would I have the best chance of being able to pay for an upgrade on, travelling SYDNEY to HONOLULU.
I don’t have many points at the moment so I’ll have to pay cash and I’d like to pay for Economy then hope for the upgrade offer before departure rather than cough up the full amount for J now.
I’m prepared to go any obscure route if it’s good value.
I hope my question isn’t too broad.

I believe FJ has their Bula Bid programme? You can get the A350 from SYD-NAN I think. Flights from NAN-HNL can be/are? however a narrowbody aircraft via APW or CXI. HA seem also to have a "bid up" offer for "eligible bookings". (Whatever that may be)

We are travelling SYD/HNL in May with Hawaiian Airlines and they have a 'bid upgrade'. The minimum one way upgrade bid is approx. $1600 AUD SYD/HNL per person.

A "points" upgrade will most likely require status with the airline FF program, regardless of the number of points you have accumulated.
