I have 206,000 points.Am saving them for a return fare to UK in Business Class.
What would you suggest...dear Paul !

Hi,

Check out http://www.australianfrequentflyer....uent-flyer-program/how-do-i-book-j-29610.html. If you can snag a seat this way then this is the best option as you will earn points and status credits on your flight. Regardless of which carriers you actually fly on I believe that Qantas is going to pass on the fuel surcharge so taxes will be about 800 return. If not then classic award is your best bet. It will cost 256000 return in J, however if you want to save up an extra 14000 then you can get a Oneworld explorer fare that gives you a round the world option (and may be better value as you might miss out on fuel surcharges) for 280 000. Search on this site or Qantas's for advice on how to book those.

You could do a OW 35,000 mile award in Premium Economy for around 210,000 which is pretty good value for money, but not all airlines have PE so that might limit you to which ones you could use... If you can save up another 80,000 (few credit card applications and some points form else where) you could get a OW 35,000 award in J for 280,000 QFF points... Where in Australia are you located again???

Sydney. Can I do what I did last time... Sydney to Singapore return in Premium Economy and Singapore to London return in Business Class..

With any award redemption if one flight is in the higher class the whole redemption will be classed at the higher cost in points/mile...

You'd want to do that as two separate award redemptions...

We recently flew Qatar airways from Heathrow to Melbourne return in economy having compared seat pitch and widths as well as prices. We booked well in advance, maybe may 2012 for the Feb 2013 flights and in spite of having Qantas FF miles from a previous Heathrow/Brisbane flight with Qantas it was still cheaper with Qatar after factoring in the Qantas miles in a cash plus miles fare quote.
Another thing we found out running a simple check on seatguru was that seat pitch and width in Qatar economy was better than Qantas premium !
Flying business is still a far flung lottery funded dream that has me somewhat green with envy when I log onto the various flyer websites wherein most contributors are relating business or even 1st class experiences lol.
In the previous run thru of various comments on this topic I noticed someone suggesting the OP stay home till he`d collected enough points to fly "J" business, is there something I`m missing here ? stay home till he has enough miles ?

It's that you can get a lot more bang for your buck/points when you book with J or F - particularly when using Singapore or Malaysia airlines internationally. (which is making me regret transferring so many points into Velocity with its current comparatively shocking international availability and value!)

For many programs, redeeming awards in Y costs almost more than to just buy a cheap cash fare... Not always though, but often... For an economy fare i would tend to only use my QFF points for the OW 35,000 mile award as that's where you tend to get the best value from...

But flying J doesn't have to be super expensive, but you might just need to get creative...

Does anyone here travel in Y to USA/Europe? :) I may have to as I have a growing family and won't earn enough points to travel in J for the whole family :)

Really? That's one of the snobbiest comments I have ever seen. I joined this group to get ideas for when I can afford to travel, so yes there are some of us out here who travel Y to the USA/Europe - it beats sitting at home wishing I could travel but figure because I can't afford J or higher that I can't go. I imagine the solution to travelling with your growing family is for you is to sit up in J and make the rest of them travel Y...

This remark has absolutely nothing to do with my conversations with 2 other wise members...lines must have crossed somewhere.

With Krisflyer you get 15% discount if you book Singapore Airline reward tickets online and therefore a Y return from Perth to Europe is 68000 points. You do have to pay quite high taxes and fees but my husband, myself and son have been able to redeem two return trips to Europe, it works out roughly we get three reward Y tickets to Europe for the price of one discounted Yticket (the total fees and taxes are about that much depending on destinations). For us this is worth it rather than one person flying J.
