Which phone do you colleagues use and succeeds in QFF app

Samsung also brings up the name message as my xgody, device not compatible.
This so I know for next time I decide to "upgrade" my prepaid phone.
I do realise that we can just click the menu OLCI on the QFF website, next to manage my booking around where flights are.
Am not an apple iphone sort.

That‘s a pity, because I find they work the best for QF, VA and many others. I have a lovely collection of boarding passes for planes, trains etc in my Apple Wallet.

Samsung make different series/classes of phone. Ive always had Galaxy S series (i.e. flagship) and been very happy, although the less expensive A series (half the price) can be fine provided you get one of the newer models with nfc. J series are less supported.

Why nfc? Well to do the new DPD need nfc to be able to read your passport.

Ive not had any errors with QF app on my person S21Fe 5g nor previously or work supplied A52.

I also loathe iphone, find them unusable, but others love them.

Generally companies are going to test apps on the more popular devices, and only on last 2-3 os versions, so if you buy a very uncommon device or are running os that is more than 2 years old you may have issues. I find phone companies (i buy my device direct, not a telco variant) and telcos ensure that higher end models get os updates faster than low end.

I have used Motorola phones over the past decade, upgrading every two years. I get the twin SIM models so I can drop in a local SIM card when I'm travelling, with a microSD card slot so I can expand the storage. I've had no issues with any of the airline or travel apps. You can pick one up for $300 or so

Do you buy the Motorola phones locally or in Asia ? I didn't think dual sim models were available for sale in Oz - and I am ignoring that they may be available on-line and be imported by the likes of Kogan.

I suspect your issue isn't the brand of phone but the version of the operating system.

Ah that's the problem if you are tempted by the Dark Side.

Apple wallet works very well. I put all our boarding passes, hotel reservations, credit cards etc in the Wallet.

Not sure if this is specifically related, but I have an ongoing issue with the Qantas App freezing when on my Samsung S21 Plus. :-( It allows me to open the app to the log in page but then won't respond at all after that.

This has been the case for at least 12 months if not 18 months. I now just go through the QF website on my mobile browser.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the app many times with no success. :-(

Has anyone else had this issue and ideally sourced a solution that has worked?

I do have apple id, from my ipod days.
So, looks like an elcheapo iphone will have to do when the time comes.
Only will use it for domestic travel, no more (e)n z(ed), trips for me.
That DPD and the new IPC (what ever system it will do/use), puts me off from doing a quick NZ trip.
So much procedures, esp if all we want is 3 to 4 days in NZ, but having to spend half an hour to an hour of DPD processing.

I've bought my phones in the past through Kogan. But I got my latest G30 from JB HiFi. I was after the better camera, and the bigger battery. It does have two SIM card slots, although if you want to add to the memory with a microSD card, it uses one of those slots. The G30 comes with 128GB of storage, so I haven't bothered with the memory card.

It took me less than 3 mins, would be quicker if you have a friend to hold the passport open for you while you photograph. You really shouldnt let the DPD stop you travelling.

Samsung S21 Plus

I think its because the Plus versions (being a phablet) often get the tablet version of the app and the testing concentrates more on the phone version. For about a month the Qantas app stopped working on my tablet but then righted itself with the next update and my galaxy tab is older than the S21.

When I used to manage phone app development projects, registering an android app for the Google Play store, required you to specifically list all handset models and OS versions (this is why sometime overseas purchased variants dont work optimially with Aus app store). It could be that they didn't test the S21+ properly, or put in under the wrong app version. For iphones, apple themselves will sometimes dictate whether you can make a new app available for older models in their store (Apple have that whole forced obscelence thing going on).

We always priorirised the Samsung S series and the upper end iPhones. If time then theyd do the lower end Samsung (always A before J) and lower end apple (i.e the SEs) then some of the lesser androids. Whilst we tended to do phone specific versions of app for the flagship models (S series and Iphone), for other handsets they often would build an app that just rendered the mobile version of the website.

When Im due for a new phone I always buy the latest in the flagship series, as these tend to be supported longer than the cheáper variants. If you buy direct form Samsung or Apple you can get handsets which dont have all the Telco (Tesltra, Optus, Voda) bloatware on them, and depending on your employer can often get good discounts. Because of Telco bloatware, when OS updates come out you get them later on phones from Telco because they have to test their bloatware.

If you want an Android with no real bloatware (not telco or brand) then consider a Pixel - those phones now come direct from Google and only have native android.

No issues with a bunch of Android phones.
Last two Nokia 8.3 and Nokia 8, but I also have no issues downloading it on an LG K42, and a few China brands before that.

I think unfortunately XGody is a known knock-off manufacturer that cheats with fake specs..

Of the cheaper manufacturers I'd trust
Xiaomi, Oppo, Nokia

iPhone. No issues with any that I have had. My partner has a Samsung (S21+ Ultra) and the saved boarding pass displays too big on the screen and he has to scroll down to show the date whenever we board. No way to change the display size that we have been able to work out. No issues with my iphone opening from apple wallet

Just read the comments when I looked at the DPD app - if QF rely on the work experience kids in their IT area, Border Force may use those who failed the QF work experience course…

I would look at what your phone provider (unless you use a sim only provider like amaysim or whatever) might provide a deal on. I'd look at a mid level Android like a current, or recent (eg: 2020-2021 release) Samsung A series phone - they're cheaper but should handle everything required over the medium term (I use a S20 from 2020 which runs Android 12 and works just fne with all the apps, including QF).

Remember "cheap" may have caveats for reasons, and since the whole point is to support, for as much as possible, the ever updating level of OS (egL Android or IOS) required to support the latest apps that this is something that definitely needs to be taken into account, and also a more name brand like a LG, Samsung, Apple, etc than a knock off is probably also the safer way to go in terms of actual OS support.

Most Android developers use the Pixel line as a reference platform.. so your best chance* of a bug-free experience will be on a Pixel. You might also consider a Samsung A series if looking for value for money.

*Pixel user here, QFF app is still riddled with bugs because, well, Qantas IT/Engineering. But almost all other apps are rock solid.

Apple have a better rep for long term support of their products than many Android manufacturers. Support currently extends all the way back to the iPhone 6s that was released in 2015, and sold through 2018.

The google pixel 3, launched in 2018 and sold through 2020, got turned off for updates last year. Where google is better than Apple is they publish their expected sunset dates, where as apple tend to spring this on users when they update iOS. I probably wouldn't go as far back as an iPhone 7 unless it was really cheap, though.
