I always go AC - just make sure you're on AC metal, not UA metal with AC code.

How do you get AC as site says UA for cheapest and SKYWEST\United Express is the E90 AC?

http://www.aircanada.com

The Air Canada website makes it pretty easy to tell who the operating carrier is.

I find them cheap enough and decent aircraft.

Alaska (AS) might be your other option, but I would still go AC.

i'm doing a similar trip in october.

just booked with expedia.com.au - saves on the currency conversion fees and seemed to give a better exchange rate as teh AUD was down to 1.01 USD at the time.

I'm fling direct both ways with AC as they were the cheapest and at the times i wanted.

I was surprised how much price differences there could be for some of the code shares. One flight on AS was avail as code share for Delta and AA. AA were charging about $100 more. Crazy. I decided AC would do as I can have the points credit to SQ. Tis a shame I can't credit them to DJ.

Now just gotta decide if the SQ flight from LAX to JAPAN then KL is better in DJ or Krisflyer.

I am with you Jeffrey on using the Australian Expedia for a simple cheap flight. At 2 hours 59 minutes don't expect real food on the flight LAX-YVR unless it is stated.
Easy and cheap works.
Priceline could be considered.

Is direct with AC website not the cheapest way to get ticket?

Nope

when I booked with Expedia SFo - YVR was $164 inc taxes. the AC web site listed $173 CAD. Factor in 3.4% currency conversion and booking via Expedia in AUD is a winner.

i think sometimes the middle eastern carriers can be cheaper to book direct.
