I've flown SYD-LAX 5 times this year, and its always been a 380, so I booked in 3 weeks time and didn't look at the aircraft type and its a 744!!!! Any idea why the change? If I hadn't been busy when I booked, I'd have changed flights to get a 380. GRRRRR!
As an aside, how good is the IFE in the 744's now?

Mondays often sees a 744 instead of A380.
If you are on QF11 on 13 Aug it is a non refurbished 744 so IFE will be unreliable.
Take plan B with you.

I'm flying out on Aug 10, and back on the 17th - both 744 aircraft

Call them and check if it was actually changed after you booked from a 388 to a 744. If it was, they will allow free flight changes if the aircraft has been changed (I've done it when they swapped a 738 to a 734 - they said they can check the system and see any changes, and will swap flights at no charge).

Funny how we all have different preferences - I purposely choose dates/routes to make sure I get a 747 rather than an A380!

I'd consider the OP's situation a piece of incredibly good luck! (Though would have been better with a refurbed 747).

I'll go with the flow on this - can't change dates due to commitments at the other end. I figure that after 4 hours in the F lounge, I won't care what plane it is! I've booked an exit row seat in Y and I'll just curl up with a good book and sleep all the way over. Coming home, I'll be stuffed anyway, so sleep won't be a problem. Next time I'll pay more attention when I book.
