Had I not read otherwise, I would also have taken "non-stop" and "direct" to mean the same thing.

I guess it may be the airline industry's way of distinguishing between two different scenarios in as few words as possible.

Another of these was the QF21 MEL-NRT (via Syd). Often a 737 ex MEL and a 747/763 ex SYD.
