Why did AJ exclude JQi from his figures? The 82% Myth!

So if you are booked on a QF codeshare flight eg MEL/SIN/MEL, DRW/SGN/DRW etc that's operated by JQ metal, whose stats do you fall in to? The QF 18% or the JQ 8%?

Looking at the BITRE report it would definitely be JQ, as the tables all refer to the "operator" of the services, and none of the non-operating codeshare airlines are there ... like AF, UL, AI, AA, LH, 9W, US, OA etc ..

Correct, and note the Air Pacific figures as well which could almost be QF as well.

Really when you think about it Qantas group is doing ok.

If they were the only International airline in Australia they would be doing very well to get over 50% market share. Because I would expect foreign airlines to pick up the other 50% as usually there are reciprocal air transport agreements between nations.

But they are not the only Australian based airline that flies overseas. If they had an equally strong competitor then a 25% share would be ok. Of course there is no Australian based competitor as strong as Qantas, but Virgin is growing.

Or if you consider there are three main Australian based international airlines Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin. Then one third of 50% is 16.6%. So 18% is looking ok, but not great considering they are the biggest.

Also there are a number of routes that Qantas chooses not to fly. Some are small so it makes sense that only one airline fly the route, but Qantas will often partner another airline and code share on a lot of these routes. While, some routes such as MEL-KUL, which is one of the 10 busiest from Australia, the choose not to directly compete on.

So the Qantas group's 27% doesn't look so bad in that light. Although they could do a bit better.
