I grew up on fast mainframe printers but they were also temperamental. The most fun was when one had to change paper from *std to labels, delivery dockets, invoices, cheques etc. And also loved it when month end would run overnight and you would get in to work and find a paperjam in the first report. :shock: Stream of angry users wanting to know when their reports will be ready.

Maybe with Memjet printers getting more common the headache would be smaller ...

The joys I used to have with airline ticket printers before they introduced the etickets (you remember the ones with the carbon paper). They had to be aligned perfectly they would always jam in busy moments, the ticket stock would be wrong.... it was a nightmare

I have awesome memories of Novell NetWare and Apple LaserWriters back in Uni (I'm not that old. Honest!).

The amount of cough the Uni support desk had, just because of printers, be they the Apple ones or the HP ones. Constantly breaking.

And as stated, they haven't got that much better. Sure, it's a high-heat environment with lots of moving parts, but, to quote a TV personality "How hard can it be?"
