Why I will no longer enjoy and participate in AFF

I think it is sad that grammar becomes more important than content.
Everybody makes mistakes but there have been some people on AFF over the years where the grammar is so bad that it is almost impossible to read and understand the context of the post.

But in no way am I saying the OP is one of these people.

I would say that most of the grammar I see, and I am afraid your post is included in this, is appalling. I choose not to judge though. (My grammar is, mostly, poor. I am fundamentally lazy.) How many people want to live their lives by "The Oxford Companion To The English Language"? (I can think of one FT member who thinks he does, but unfortunately is found wanting.)

To Wayne Bourke - It is sad to see another person pull the pin on the site

I think one of the issues is that there isn't a proof reading cycle before most people press the 'Post' button. I sometimes see my own errors after I press the button!

Unfortunately, I think the issue is a bit deeper than grammar on this site at the moment. As has been noted, the site has got a bit 'coughy' of late, and periods of folk sniping at each other. It really does detract from the sharing nature of the site.

Take a break & come back.

Interpreting a post can be tricky......I've recently been pinged for bad behaviour and I couldn't believe it.

I've never posted anything trying to belittle or upset another member - I did it without even knowing I done it!

Maybe you've struck some bad apples......maybe you came across someone like me - no intention of bad behaviour however, managed to do just that.

Good luck & good travels.

I still find AFF to be a really great resource Wayne so don't leave. We are here to help one another enjoy their travelling lives!
And it's working for lots of us........

don't worry wayne. have your flounce (an announced flounce in this case).

we all know the spelling and grandma naz_s will be the first against the wall come the revolution. they are just little control freaks, once you realise this, they are easily to manipulate.

misspell and prosper...

OP don't worry some poor grammar and the odd person who is not nice, this will happen on any public forum, stay on and glean all the information from those in the know at AFF like we all do. In my case i find it all so fascinating how the experts can work the FF system to full advantage.

Gotta say after spending some time on FlyerTalk as a newbie there, AFF is a delight! Some of the nastiness there has to be seen to be believed! Wayne hang around, use the report this post button and let's weed these individuals out of a fantastic forum!

Thank you for all your kind words, I received a nice note from the moderator.

Perhaps I need to toughen up, I have always considered myself bullet prof, I think as we get older we get more thin skinned than we used to be.

I will stay and continue to participate in the forum and enjoy the resource and all the positives you have pointed out to me.

From this time forward I will be known as the Dyslexic traveler, as long as I keep my left from my right sorted, I should always end up in the pointy end of the plane, if not I will just have to pray to my DOG

Again thank you

Outstanding decision...and remember...when you board an international flight, turn left

Personally I'm not too fussed on spelling or grammar on forum posts. I often come to the conclusion that if the person is picking apart my spelling or grammar (unless it's to get clarification on a point), then they have lost the argument and it's now boiled down to "I know you are but what am I".

If they hadn't lost the argument then they would still be pointing out things where they have a differing view or where they feel I made a mistake in my facts.

So quite simply, if someone is having a go at your spelling or grammar, it is very much their problem, not yours.

From my observation it is not just the ones that love to jump down peoples throats.

There are also some people who think looking down on others who do not hold their point of view or means deserve to be insulted and ridiculed. Just because people do not respond in these threads to avoid confrontation does not mean that your stupidity and childishness has gone unotticed.

Good decision! I joined the forum (but still haven't introduced myself...my bad!) for the welcoming and willing to help attitude that pervades the majority of what I read, not to proof-read the posts! I can proof-read them but you will have to pay on a per-word basis :!:
Mrs TheEmu used to have a desktop publishing company specialising in proof-reading so I can tell you, TheDt, that your spelling and grammar is quite ok compared to some "professional" authors! I would sometimes get an email returned from her with corrections in red and a mark out of 10... (I always tried for a high mark:cool:)
If we can put up with 3 metre billboards advertising "TV's" for sale, we can surely tolerate the odd spelling and grammar faux pas from an excited traveller sharing their adventures on a dedicated forum?

Perhaps I need to toughen up, I have always considered myself bullet prof, I think as we get older we get more thin skinned than we used to be.

Yeah, I was going to say: "Harden up" but both your OP and 2nd post carried an ad imploring me to Date older women, so I thought better of it.
Cheers,
TheEmu
P.S. "traveler" should have a capital "T"

Ah, the grandma naz_s. Auto-correct has a lot to answer for. :D

My nephew is dyslexic, and for a few years quite proudly wore a t-shirt emblazoned with "Dyslexics of the world - Untie!"

There's more important things in life than correcting someones spelling.

I don't know what triggered the OPs post but reading between the lines it seems someone was unhappy at his spelling and/or grammar. I can't say I've ever noticed the OPs posts before so can't comment on them.

However, my point and it is not directed at the OP but to people who post threads like this I ask why?

What do you hope to achieve? If you're unhappy then, in my opinion you have two options;
a) try and improve things, maybe contacting the moderators or,
b) leave.

I prefer option a, but occasionally option b, is better for me.

Sometime a time out is better for everyone and you can reflect on what made you upset and decide if it was worth it. If so then try one of the options. If not then resume posting with no one the wiser. We all disappear from time to time.

Because each one of us is unique. What doesn't make sense to you often makes sense to another. That is just the way of the world.
Personally I think I know where the OP is coming from.

Professional life? Mostly by such guides, though with an Aus English bent (for now).
Personal life? Sometimes, sometimes not. I fear for the teachers of my child, I had enough arguments with my own English teachers in high school. One even thought there were only two kinds of sonnet.

That being said, I hate autocorrect, refuse to use, so all mistakes I make are the result of my own "passion finger" typing. Mine, all mine. And I try not to point out others mistakes in public, whether in a forum or in public speech. Apart from my child; I will correct her almost all the time. Poor thing, I'm very Tiger Mother about her grammar and speech most of the time. And if I'm editing at work, I'll happilt wield my red pen. :)
