Why is there no SYD to SIN overnighter?

Just curious.. Why doesn't Singapore operate an overnighter out of Sydney? They have one out of Brisbane, Melbourne and even Perth so you wouldn't think it's a demand issue...
It could leave around 10:30pm (before curfew of course) and get into Singapore around 5am?
SQ211 currently gets into Sydney at 7:15pm and just sits there overnight so an aircraft is technically available...

That aircraft might be required for the first flight out the following day? An aircraft landing in the morning possibly wouldn't turn around in time.

Trouble would be an arrival around 0450 for 6 months of the year which is sort of ok. For the other 6 months it would be 0350 ... Not sure if that is terribly attractive arrival time.

BNE and MEL don't have a stupid curfew. I suspect few people would want to arrive in SIN at 0300 or 0400, which they would have to do to beat the SYD departure curfew.

And anyway, it's too short of a flight to be a useful overnighter, in my opinion.

I agree. The overnighter on the way back doesn't afford more than 5 or 6 hours sleep usually and thats only possible if you decline the meal service.

Disagree, I find the MEL-SIN overnight flights OK (much better than the SIN-MEL flights overnight) I find the 0005 (or 0105 depending on time of year) out of MEL less tiring than the 1800/1830 flights that arrive in SIN at 0030 and getting home and eventually to sleep after 2am ... and that's in economy. Did both services last year a couple of times each. Can't pin point why, maybe it's the getting to bed at 4 or 5am AEST time that makes them more difficult.

Anyway, much better than the other direction, as MEL-SIN flying time is often 7.5 hrs, whereas SIN-MEL can be as little as 6:15 (assume similar for SYD). In fact travelling from SIN to MEL & SYD there are up to 18 flights a day, and of those .... 14 are overnight (notably for QFF'ers, whether it be on QF, EK, JQ or BA, all are overnight). In the other direction there is only 1 overnight flight.

I also blame the SYD curfew.... if they were allowed a departure at around midnight, I bet it would be offered.

It's been done in the past. Both Qantas and Gulf Air operated late night departures to SIN arriving in the early AM (4-5). Both gave up on it.

Think QF5 SYD-FRA used to depart ~22:00 and arrive ~4:00.

I like the red eyes exAustralia as they allow a whole day to connect to anywhere in Asia. I don't mind routing via BNE for the red-eye and in future could route via MEL as well.

Just did SQ 218 in economy again last night (red eye .. ex-MEL), arrived at 6am went home, got an hour's sleep (plus a bit of sleep on plane). Been in the office since 9am, still functioning fully. Would have missed out on visiting brother/sister in law and his two young boys if I'd gone on the early evening flights instead. Love the flight - a great time maximiser on short trips.

Would have missed out on visiting brother/sister in law and his two young boys if I'd gone on the early evening flights instead. Love the flight - a great time maximiser on short trips.

I'm not sure whether I'd be fully functional after a red eye but it's great they are there for the reason you mention.

I am looking at going to Thailand again in November and looking at departing Tuesday night. I will be booking Qantas award as they appear to be good value.

Either BNE-SIN on EK or BNE-MEL-KUL allow for almost full day of work in Brisbane Tuesday and then travel overnight. Next day it will be either award SIN-CNX on SQ or KUL-SIN-CNX and I get into CNX late Wednesday afternoon.

QF32 LHR-SIN-SYD used to depart SIN at 9:00am and I was on that flight once or twice.

Not sure why Qantas has QF6/QF82 departing SIN a few hours apart. The same with QF128/QF118 departing HKG a few hours apart.

I've become a big fan of EK on SIN-BNE, departing at 330p arriving 1245a, home by 130a.

I have been on SQ day flights from SIN to SYD a few times and they seem to be pretty busy flights.

That was the daytime flight through from LHR.

Now their focus is on the EK tie up and transitting via Middle East. And Qantas does not have enough aircraft to risk a morning departure ex-Asia as that would mean a number of hours idle on the ground in Asia unless they depart around midnight in Australia to arrive in Asia early morning.

I for one hope Qantas puts more focus into Asian routes. Perhaps when the 787s arrive.

It is frustrating that Qantas don't have an option for a daytime trip home. I've had to do economy a few times over the last couple of years and have used CX from HKG and TG from
BKK purely for the daytime flights.

It actually makes economy fairly manageable

Absolutely agree. I have used SQ several times just for the daytime trip home. Of course overnight in J is fine but close to unbearable in Y.
