Well a good dare I say it 'enhancement'. Even if only fast enough for emails and reading news apps it will go down well with the road warriors. Just block Skype no calls from the sky please :)

If there is no data limit then the connection will be throttled BIG time.

I note ABC news breakfast were saying using mobile phones in flight is now allowed because of this wifi thing. DHs.

And I am sure many people will use it for phone calls. Wait and see.

Technically phone calls will not be possible. VOIP maybe but not phone calls.

We received a bill for data usage in Singapore and of course the end user denied taking there phone to Singapore

In reviewing the bill we could see the phone got a Telstra connection over Carnarvon

The bill read something like Data connection - Perth Airport ..... nothing for a hour then .... 5 minutes of connection at Carnarvon ... nothing for 4 hours until connected in Singapore

I suspect the big sat dishes in Carnarvon assisted with signal :)

When the proof was presented, sorry must have left my phone in my handbag

Re: Qantas 2016 Half Year results

What can we expect ~800 ms response time with this service? it is going to kill the experience

Bit hard to attach Fibre to an aircraft.

Geosync orbit is about 38000km, which is about 125ms each way.

Fine for Internet and streaming (with buffer). VOIP will be a little stop start but not too bad

Could you possible come and configure my sat services best we have got is 600ms?

Let's hope so. With cabin noise I would imagine intending users would need decent headphones/mics to communicate but those that don't will likely be yelling into their phones.

no different to the current practice of pax yelling (chatting) to those sitting next to/around them:rolleyes:...especially the pax that have their headphones on whilst carrying on a conversation with fellow pax!!!

I don't know about you but I can sort of handle a conversation between 2 or more people next to me even if it's loud.

But a one sided conversation on a phone does my head in. Even worse if that conversation is on speaker.

it's all the same type of noise to me...just comes from different 'sources'..just my opinion of course..and throw in a mix of kids 'noises' which would 'outnoise' everything else on an aircraft:lol:...it's all part of the glamour of PUBLIC transport:lol:. i'm not complaining...i'm just pointing out the reality:D

I guess we are all different.

Kids noises don't bother me. I am talking about very young kids/babies that don't quite know what is going on. Have no time for uncontrollable spoiled brats.

Noise coming from adults is a different story. Screeching headphones gives me a headache. One sided conversations with all the hand gestures annoy me.

Personally I'd prefer if some people had a mute button on public transport.

That's a really interesting observation.

I wonder if it's easier to filter out a conversation where you can hear both sides because your brain doesn't have to do any work to fill in the blanks? That is, when you can only hear some idiot on the phone/one side of the conversation, like it or not your brain is pattern matching/attempting to guess what's happening on the other end?

That's instantly 500ms (up/down/up/down) for two-way sat. Add in time to/from the host trying to be reached, cross country/continent connections and who knows what other latency, you're easily up to 800ms+.

VoIP and other RTP stuff will not work well on 500ms let alone 800.

Are you using two way sat or just downlink via sat?

300msec used to be the 'gold standard' for sat. 600 is high though for a single up/down.

In a way I think you are right. It's about filtering and ignoring. Plus it looks silly if someone looks like they are talking to themselves in public. ;)

Probably had 20 sat services with 3 different companies never got less than 650ms round trip
