Coming from SA I am assuming that we will be allowed to travel to WA in the next few months. I've always wanted to see some of the WA wildflower areas. Any suggestions or areas to visit are welcome. Happy to drive around and would also like to visit Lake Ballard.

And this popped up in my mail box the other day

Good blurb - but the pic is not the Menzies pub. It's the post office and I think the tourist office and other bits and pieces. The Town Hall and shire office is the building on the left with the clocktower in the distance.

This pic from is three weeks ago - during the shutdown. The pub is the first building on the right. The building they label as the pub is the next one down the same side of the street.

For a second I thought that they were going run Cruise Boats on the Lake;)

What the article doesn't mention about the idea of taking a few hours to see all the sculptures is the climate. It was close to 50 C when we went there - not in the middle of summer. We managed to see only a few before we were driven off the salt by the heat. Apparently it is fascinating to see them after a wet spell as the water only gets about knee deep and they seem to float in the lakes expanse. Admittedly the roads might also be closed.

I won't be going anywhere near it if it's even close to 40 let alone 50

Never let the facts get in the way of a good promotional brochure

It was good to show our German friends what live was like in the bush. They had been standing on an open train platform near Stuttgart in
minus 6 C temperatures about 5 days beforehand.

There was a lot more salt on the surface when we were there.

Though I should add the wildflowers I am looking for are terrestial orchids not the expanses of flowers to the north.

Ideally you want to go at the start or end of the day as the statues cast long shadows. And yes, when wet or after it's been wet, that mud is like clay. After taking ten steps you'll be 6 inches taller. I'd recommend wellies if it's been raining.

There had been a huge thunderstorm go through the night before. You can get an idea of the mud. Second picture is from the top of the hill looking in a similar direction to the first.

Back at the Menzies pub. Nothing more WA than a can of bush chook and the local dog.

Late September or thereabouts, I just open my back door and head up to my 20 acres of bush. All sorts of wildflowers on the edges... Though most of the time there are far more kangaroos than flowers....

A reason to not be wandering?
