Hello,
Thanks to the australia passport office delays there’s a chance w may need to cancel our flight which was purchased using our Qantas points.

Does anyone know what the conditions are and if we will lose our points?

One of the advantages of points bookings is that they are flexible for cancellation so you would be refunded points and copay. Hope you don't have to prove it for yourselves

Do you know if you purchased reward seats or used points plus pay? This will make a difference in terms of the rules that apply.

If you don't know, we might be able to help you figure that out if you tell us where you are flying from and to, and how many points you spent per passenger.

I’ll have to double check with my wife but I know we used frequent flyers points and paid an extra fee for admin and taxes I think.

In "Manage My Booking", you can see the Fare Conditions. If the Fare Conditions are all "Classic Reward", you can cancel before 31 Dec with a full refund of points & taxes+fees.

If a change is possible, might be better to grab the seats for another date now, knowing if it all goes pear shaped, you can still get your points & cash back.
It did this a few times during snap lockdowns taking a guess when travel would be allowed again before the rush.

Does anyone know how long the OP has to cancel? Can they cancel literally at the last minute (i.e. 2 hours prior to departure?). If I was him, I'd put off cancelling until I was really sure the Australian Passport office can't come through. Also I'm somewhat curious how there can be a delay in processing passports since they can be done same day in most jurisdictions provided you show up to a physical passport office location and can prove your travel is imminent (i.e. with a confirmed booking). What am I missing here?

The fare conditions state, for an award booking:
prior to the commencement of the first flight in your booking
so I would imagine 2h prior departure is still fine.
I personally tested 24h and a bit once, no issues.

As an aside, non-QFF programs can differ. BA Avios redemptions for example need to be cancelled >24h
