Have you also looked at the schedule? It is possible that one airline's schedule is more suitable for you than the other.

I'm thinking of something similar as well, actually. Currently QF SG, but I'll be going SIN-NYC return in 3 months time. I can join A3, fly on an *A airline, and get to *A Gold with this trip. After that, I can use the *A Gold benefits on SQ, while I build up the status with DJ. A bit of a roundabout way, but that seems to work for me (if I indeed choose to pursue this option).
