DVT gets quite a mention. Now, I'm not doubting there is an increases risk, but I am questioning how significant that increased risk actually is? My gut tells me its likely to be statistically insignificant, but I'm always ready to be proven wrong (I usually am)
DVT? Risk is insignificant for most people in Y and Y-.
The people who get DVT in these situations tend to be obese, smokers, on the oral contraceptive pill, pregnant, have an underlying clotting disorder like antiphospholipid syndrome, Factor V Leiden, Protein C,S deficiency, recent leg trauma, recent abdominal, leg surgery
Now these people get DVT without flying anyway.
The Average Risk apparently is 1:6000 flights (actual risk higher if one of the above)
the coughulative evidence is inconclusive. The fact that someone in the above list gets it while flying is not necessarily evidence that flying or flying in Y causes or is attributable to DVT.
I remember several years ago there was a try-on for a workers comp claim. Lady developed DVT according to her working as a sales assistant in David Jones. She said her work caused her DVT. Never mind she had Factor V Leiden. Insurer refused.
