DVT gets quite a mention. Now, I'm not doubting there is an increases risk, but I am questioning how significant that increased risk actually is? My gut tells me its likely to be statistically insignificant, but I'm always ready to be proven wrong (I usually am) :)

DVT? Risk is insignificant for most people in Y and Y-.
The people who get DVT in these situations tend to be obese, smokers, on the oral contraceptive pill, pregnant, have an underlying clotting disorder like antiphospholipid syndrome, Factor V Leiden, Protein C,S deficiency, recent leg trauma, recent abdominal, leg surgery

Now these people get DVT without flying anyway.

The Average Risk apparently is 1:6000 flights (actual risk higher if one of the above)

the coughulative evidence is inconclusive. The fact that someone in the above list gets it while flying is not necessarily evidence that flying or flying in Y causes or is attributable to DVT.

I remember several years ago there was a try-on for a workers comp claim. Lady developed DVT according to her working as a sales assistant in David Jones. She said her work caused her DVT. Never mind she had Factor V Leiden. Insurer refused.

I think it was more the "not due to my racism", which makes me wonder what *is* actually due to your racism.
Perhaps when you have read more widely on the site you might come across a discussion opened up by the OP where her dislike of transitting via DXB led to just such a discussion. Quite a few on AFF, myself included, do not like DXB as a transit point despite the luxurious lounge facilities. And some of us have had a history of transit through Dubai going back several decades which only strengthens that view. Others love DXB - everyones MMV.

In the normal course of events I would not go via PER (am MEL based), as I just don't see the point (for me, anyway). I find the thought of such a long flight in Y (I've done plenty in my time, don't wish to any more), on any plane type rather unappealing . I guess if there was another factor (visiting PER for other reasons for example) then I'd consider it in J. Price will pay be an interesting consideration too. But essentially, no. :)

Is this route just a marketing ploy?

Looking at the small sample, the route appears not to be appealing.

When QF shut down the international routes out of Perth and forced us to fly via Mel / Syd / Bris for OS routes, the QF flyers took to other international carriers.
If QF dont do this right I can see this route coming and going very quickly.

What would you do if QF forced all London bound routes to fly via Perth?

Well, increased compared to the A380 which could technically fly the route, but despite the amazing and unbelievably popular nature of the all-new direct route, AJ wants the lower fuel consumption of the B787 for some reason!

Why would the risk be higher on a 787 over A380 for the same length flight in Y? Especially given Y has better seat pitch? Can you elaborate on what the actual increase in risk is?

Its the ability to move about the cabin that makes a difference ... wont affect some, but for those more predisposed to DVT, walking around from time to time, not in a crablike manner, is helpful. Wider aisles and bar area in certain J decks make for a much nicer trip for some.

1 of 2 reasons,

If the price is right,
and
if I have a need to be in Perth.

Living in Brisbane I don't to go via Perth unless of price and needing to be in Perth before or after I have visited the UK.

Do what I did when they cut out options via Asia to LHR/EU - continue to fly with other carriers unless the price of J is competitive with CX/AY etc.

Qantas non-stop Perth to London flights from east coast: The issues raises the problem of alternate airports when flying LHR-PER.

I'm a "wait and see" at the moment. I'd probably give it a go in J for the novelty (provided I'm still capable of flying in March 2018) but I'm a firm believer in the adage "why fly direct when you can connect". I'm a leisure traveller and not in a hurry to get anywhere.

Now if they flew ex PER via Asia, I'm a definite buyer.

Ah well there I was just trying to resist tarring other AFFers (who dislike DXB) with that brush. I don't consider myself racist.

How much wider are the A380 aisles? Isn't the idea that just walking about is sufficient, regardless of crab like manner or otherwise? Y pax won't be accessing the bar area on the J deck so I don't see how that becomes a factor. Honestly, this whole higher risk of DVT on the 787 over 380 seems like complete nonsense to me.

No in Y & Y+. Yes in J.

As most of my J flying is upgrades from Y on points, I have almost no use for this route unless we see large upgrade availability.

It's a no for me. I'm 185cm tall but more of that is in my legs than body. No work flights to U.K. At the moment so not worth 17 cramped hours in Y.

its a yes from me . I didn't used to like long haul flights but have recently taken a couple and found it not that bad these days with a full service carrier . It would be a real bonus for people Living in Rural australia . with one flight to Perth then Europe .!!!

Put me down as a yes and part of the hate DXB camp. Would rather transfer in Perth from Sydney and then do the super long leg to London than swap in Dubai. Last time coming back from Europe I went via Tokyo, next year I'm going via Hong Kong for 1 trip and Bangkok for the other.

Mrscove is keen and I think she would like to take family members too. Going from Perth will be a bonus allowing us to get to London well inside 24 hours.

It will be probably be yes for me anything for a slightly quicker trip to LHR ......however in Y middle seat Not great. I would not mind a stop over in Perth for a day or two!

My dislike of DXB is not due to my racism, and it is naive of you to think that. It's the airport I hate, the bus transfers, and the way I was treated on Emirates.
You know you are not allowed to dislike any destination otherwise you will be labelled a racist.

Personally I dislike the middle East but I will transit through there eventually due to convenience more than anything. There are also many parts of Asia and Europe I dislike and will more than likely never visit. And while we are here not a fan of parts of South America or Africa and have no great desire to visit other than maybe South Africa.

These are all personal choices. We are all different and some things appeal to some more than others. I am quite happy travelling between Australia and Thailand with the occasional trip to Europe and the USA.
