Wine lovers musings, amusings and news

you're right of course. Please accept my apologies. My sense of humour seems to have disappeared.
To paraphrase Frank Zappa* - "Don't drink the Yellow Tail!" :)

*"Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" is a song about a man who dreams that he was an Eskimo named Nanook. His mother warns him "Watch out where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow."

I find anything to do with wine related tales of interest, whether it be fleeting, or whether it be stored in the grey matter. We can all let ourselves go a bit here since it's a very diverse forum. Don't forget clean wine jokes are acceptable as well.

But, I don't know any jokes about "clean wine"? Enlightenment required.

I started this thread to become a home for all of the general wine chatter and news that doesn't really fit in the existing wine "deal" threads (often getting moderated/deleted as OT and lost forever...)

I'm looking forward to to seeing it grow :)

I'll start it off with these posts from qas and Dr Ralph

Thanks but it's actually qaz and Jeremy Oliver's Wine Annual was posted a couple of days earlier :)

These have to be better.

I’ve trained my dog to bring me a glass of red wine.

It’s a Bordeaux collie.

I’m a wine enthusiast. The more wine I drink, the more enthusiastic I get.

I was sat with my wife while she sipped on her glass of wine, when she said, “I love you so much, you know. I don’t know how I could ever live without you.”I said, “Is that you or the wine talking?”
She said, “It’s me talking to the wine. She got me bad.

A

What did the grape say when it was crushed?Nothing, it just let out a little wine.
An oldie.

A priest was driving down the road one day when got stopped by a cop.The cop smelled alcohol on the priest’s breath and saw an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car.
He said to the priest, “Father, have you been drinking?”
The priest replied, “Only water, officer.”
The cop then asked him, “Then why can I smell wine?”
The priest looked at the bottle and said, “Good Lord! He’s done it again.” Kerchink.

It doesn’t matter if the glass is half empty or half full. There’s clearly room for more wine.

I enjoy a glass of wine each night for it’s health benefits. The other glasses are for my witty comebacks and my flawless dance moves.

I think that's enough.

Zema Estate lost the 58year old winemaker/owner yesterday. Poor bugger died driving on the way to hospital I believe. Massive heart attack was thought to be the cause. Recently I bought some of their cabernet, 2012 I think, for about twenty dollars. Great drinking. Sprinkle or intern in the terra rossa.

[h=1]Wine grape harvest see record crush, prices[/h] July 26, 2016
AAP and Inside FMCG

Australia’s grape harvest has been a good one this year, with higher prices paid for wine grapes and a bigger intake of fruit.
The wine sector’s peak body, Wine Australia, said many in the wine industry are describing the 2016 vintage as “sensational”.
The national crush is up six per cent to about 1.8 million tonnes, and the average price for wine grapes lifted 14 per cent to $526 per tonne – the highest average price since 2009.
The amount of premium fruit selling for more than $1500 per tonne accounted for seven per cent of the total crush.
Wine Australia CEO Andreas Clark said increased international enthusiasm for Australia’s finewines from the US and China was helping to support stronger demand for premium grapes in Australia.
“The positivity for Australian fine wine is resonating within our key export markets, ” Clark said.
Prices for premium shiraz grapes rose by 14 per cent and premium cabernet sauvignon grapes by 17 per cent.
Wine Grape Growers Australia executive director Andrew Weeks said: ‘There is still much work to do, but with recent improvements in key markets and firming in wine grape prices across the nation, there is reason for cautious optimism. It is vital that this positive trend continues and that all in the wine sector are focused on continuing to build demand in key markets.’
The data for the Vintage Report 2016 was collected by Wine Australia through the Wine Sector Survey 2016 and gathered responses covering an estimated 88 per cent of the crush. The report provides price dispersion read-outs and average purchase prices for varieties in more than 40 Australian wine regions.

What are peoples thoughts about this in relation to where our retail prices are going, is the glut over as such, and will overseas sales really get a kick along?

The winemakers are taking on risk by paying more per tonne, and increasing production. I dont believe they will find buyers overseas to increase their appetite so as to push the cost per bottle up across the board. I think you will see some great bargains if you are patient and know where to look.

Maybe the US and China will take up some of the slack as UK imports will surely fall. The uk is the biggest wine export market for Australia, at about A$600M. The wine producers will have bought their fruit before Brexit. I don't think it's so much a case of European wine being cheaper than Aussie wine for UK buyers, it's that all imports are now more expensive for UK buyers.

Re: Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Sorry for the confusion, 2 May is the date. The Monday group meets about every week on a Monday (P/H etc excluded), has done since sometime in 1975, I joined in 1976, there are no original members left.
Each participant ranks the wines in their preference order, 1 to 6 and I calculate a "group preference/ranking" from a simple weighted summation of the individual rankings (using a spreadsheet on a phone/tablet).

You were lucky this was one I wrote up on my Forum, I'm a bit slack in that regard as the Monday group is as much about social catch-ups as it is about wine these days and I don't take notes that often or always post them when I do. My members chastise me regularly for my slackness in that regard.

I got it now...ok here's a tough one for you. Name your personal top three wines from vintage 1996 or after. A tough ask.......sure.
