Wine lovers musings, amusings and news

I'm a serious wine collector but this looks like a scam.
Saw this yesterday and 1) couldn't decide if I would be deemed a serious wine collector and 2) what was the go with a $2k new bottle... May as well throw my money at some cult natural wine for a punt.

Unless this is available for tasting at the cellar door so a buyer can make an informed decision, what's the point?

From the article - "every five years, Peter Lehmann Wines will hold a special tasting of Masterson at the Barossa winery. In 2024, customers and collectors will be invited to taste the 2015 vintage to see how the wine has matured with time, as well as any other vintages that have been released."

I really want a job in marketing. It seems you get to spend a day high on drugs and try come up with the most ludicrous thing and price is at a stupid price.

If anyone is interested in discussing the 2015 Peter Lehmann Masterson Magnum, please reply if you are a SERIOUS wine collector

MASTERSON embodies the strength and spirit of the Barossa community and camaraderie forged over decades with generations of family grape growers. Today these enduring relationships enable our winemakers to hand select the most exceptional parcels of fruit from the length and breadth of the region, culminating in this very special wine. The inaugural release of this wine is limited to only 1,000 magnums.

I'm a serious wine collector but this looks like a scam. Well not a scam but what the heck?! $2k for yet another Barossa shiraz with no pedigree/history. No thanks. Unless this is available for tasting at the cellar door so a buyer can make an informed decision, what's the point?

Everything about that post looks like a scam.

Blue Poles '19 Reserve Cab Franc (GW95) and '19 Reserve Merlot (GW95) were released to Five Spot members this morning.

Good article from Mrs Robinson.

TLDR:
- Avoid new-oaked wines in 2021 vintage unless the owners have deep pockets.
- Rawson's Retreat might be putting out some sweet Chenin Blanc and Pinotage (although marketed primarily to China, maybe not...)

the other more well-known and longer-standing Australian-made Italian wines are those of Dave Fletcher, and surprisingly Qantas are cheapest, including:

also interesting was TWE's Bordeaux investment:
now sourcing wine for its Rawson’s Retreat brand, previously popular in China, from South Africa. The labels look identical to those until recently used on bottles of Australian wine – except for the small print. Treasury are in geographically expansionist mode, as witness yesterday’s wine of the week from Bordeaux and these new champagnes.
Treasury Wine Estates must be delighted that their first investment in Bordeaux (more to come perhaps?) became one of only 14 crus bourgeois exceptionnels last year. The Australian company, probably best known for owning Penfolds and in expansive mode, bought the Haut-Médoc estate in 2019, and within a year the château had achieved top status in the latest ranking, which will apply to five vintages starting with the 2018.

Any idea when the Bordeaux might be on sale at Cellardoor.co?

FWIW George Samios was on radio doing his weekly spot this morn and was quite strong in his views that Wynns 2019 Black Label just released in their best ever vintage.
