Search ebay for portable router.
Nonbranded cheapies from $10 shipped from China.
Tplink 702/703 is probably better quality and about $25 from local sellers

Note many of these items state 3g/4g - this generally just means they have a USB port if you have a 3g/4g dongle

So you plug in and enter password, WiFi hotspot activated?
That's it?
Appreciate the responses... Thankyou all

I use the Asus W330NL or variations on that (have a couple of them. Very useful.

Yep.
Once you have initially configured it to router mode, and setup WiFi
Eg http://www.tp-link.com/en/faq-396.html

Just a matter of plugging it into network port, and connecting to your WiFi.

Use first device to enter any passwords etc, which will register the router, then the rest just straight connect. (Also gets around the 2/3 device restriction that some have)

Good review of the versatility here

(Eg. Using as a repeater/ AP at home)

I bought this after reading this thread. Hotel in Tokyo restricts premium Wifi to 3 devices. ..I currently have 7 devices (with family!!) connected through this device, and everyone is enjoying fast Wifi simultaneously. ..thanks all for posting the information :)

7 devices!! Talk about bang for your buck.

Picked up a new device on eBay for under $15 called a "5 in 1 router" available from a bunch of Chinese sellers - small device a bit smaller than two match boxes.

As well as the usual RJ45 port and 150N WiFi router, it also contains a USB port for attaching a 3G/4G dongle and an 1800mAh battery to use as a USB charger.

Advantage is that it can run as a router on its own battery - very useful for hotels that lack power points near the RJ45 points.

Such gadgets are good for multiple devices in rooms but would they work when in other areas of hotel maybe many floors or metres away from room?

Unlikely - they all have a pretty small internal antenna and tiny processor.

The top end wireless routers have lots of external antennas

Even household units won't do that. We're talking multiple feet of concrete per floor; this isn't home construction generally.

That's the point I was trying to intimate...when travelling the device is good for guestroom, just as at home but its use is limited when you want to use it is beyond.

I find it useful to link each of my SP4/mobile/other directly to hotel Wi-Fi so I may use devices in guestroom, lobby, restaurant.

Yes. It's limited use
- overcoming a room where the hotel has poor WiFi coverage (or slow WiFi speeds)
- overcoming device limits
