I couldn't really care less about the Qantas bash, I just read A380 for Perth and nearly s**t myself with excitement!

Finally moving into the 21st century,

I tend to ignore Ben's bias one sided commentary against QF anyway! :)

Great news that we will finally start seeing A380s here, BUT ... the final expansion of the arrivals area at the international terminal won't be happening until sometime mid to late 2014 - so until then, given the woeful state of Customs & Immigration at Perth International and the length of time it often takes to get through there now, and the usual congestion in the baggage collection area, I pity anyone whose plane lands at the same time as an A380!

I pity anyone who lands the same time as a 737/320 at PER;)

IME immigration is OK (thanks to smartgate) but customs is terrible. Takes forever when you have 2 (or more) aircraft at once.

Smartgate is good, but the layout of the smartgate area is poor.

Getting in around 4, or around midnight-1am and it is chockers. The customs lines were snaking around the baggage carousels.

All that effort to be waived through:cool:

Yes, when QF78 comes in and EK424 is a little early...throw in the usuals from Bali...argh

Wow A380 for PER,

I wonder what changes they have to make for it to land in PER and also does it create other issues for other planes at the same time due to the size of the aircraft.

Would be interested to hear from JB747 about this.

Why any changes? EK have landed a 380 with pax at PER before. Only change I would guess is getting a gate that is 380 ready

At least with the 380, if you have to travel in Y, you are sitting 10 across in an aircraft designed for it, unlike the 77W.

I thought it would be great if the flight would continue on to AKL much like the A380 EK flights to SYD & MEL do.

Would give another option for people travelling to Europe from New Zealand.

Or even Perth to New Zealand

Currently Perth airport has an ICAO fire and crash rating of category 9. This is fine for anything up to a 747, to have a regular A380 services you need to be category 10. Category 9 is fine for the odd diversion, but for regular services you need a 10. Currently MEL and SYD are the only category 10s in Australia.

Basically for category 10 over category 9 you need more staff on duty. You also need more water and foam, the ability to deliver that foam and water quicker. Which basically equates to bigger airport crash tenders.

It is in Air Services Australia 5 year plan to upgrade both PER and BNE to category 10. I suppose if there is real demand then they can fast track Perth.

Meanwhile, one year later...

Emirates the world’s largest international airline, is set to launch A380 super jumbo services to Perth from March 1.
According to Canberra sources the airline has slots approved for the 496-seat A380 to replace one of its tripe daily Boeing 777 services.

New A380 flights from Perth - The West Australian

Not sure the menu really hits the sweet part of the meat menu. ;)

Probably not for much longer...
Emirates is looking at an 11-abreast seating configuration in economy for A380
(I'd provide the URL to the SMH news item but I don't have 10+ posts)
... shudder.
