workarounds to expiring points

Qantas has a 5000 points minimum for family transfers. If one family member has say 4000 points expiring, what other gotcha condition does Qantas have in place to stop one family member from transferring 5000 points into the expiring family member's account to make 9000, and then transfer the 9000 back out again back to the donating family member in order to not lose the 4000?

That will work. As long as members are family, you can go from A to B to C to D to A.

There are ways of trying to keep points active if you don't leave it to the last minute like getting the family member nearing the expiry date to use the QANTAS Wellbeing app to earn some points.

No, because I use the FuelPay app at Ampol instead, claim the 6c/litre discount, earn Everyday Rewards points and then get $5 back from Amex as well, which when compounded on top of the fact that Ampol stations are typically 10c/litre cheaper than all BP stations straight off the standard walk-in off the street price, equates to paying about 168c/litre at Ampol versus more like 195c/litre at BP.

To answer your question, you can only do 4 or 5(?) Transfers a year I think, which may limit shuffling like this.

The only gotcha is if you don't move them back to the active account as the transfer in doesn't extend.
The conga (A to B to C to D to A) is a good way of consolidating multiple accounts without using up the limited number of transfers

This is a simple and quick option to stop points expiry. It might be limited to Oz customers only but otherwise free and points turn up 24-48 hrs later (if used thereafter, it will also keep the points alive indefinitely).

Well yes but you only need to buy about 10L of petrol, so it'd cost you less than 3 bucks to keep your points alive without the rigmorale of shuffling points betwixt accounts.

Off topic: Amex have stiffed me twice on the $5 cashback claiming that "those particular outlets" aren't included, even though they had Fuelpay. And there are two Ampols here in the ACT (Fyshwick and Mitchell) that are not proper Ampols either, which I only found out when I went to scan my EDR card, and no 4c or NRMA 6c discount either. It requires too much planning to figure out what's what with Ampol.

You're right that buying fuel at Ampol does require you having a dual doctorate in astrophysics and atomic/nuclear science before even leaving home. Ampol's idea of retailing must be the most complicated and convoluted in the history of all that's unholy.

Whilst they're all branded Ampol, there are so many different flavours of Ampol that I challenge anyone to be able to understand and keep up with it.

Ampol stations can be either Ampol or not Ampol, but no-one can tell because they’re all branded Ampol

Ampol stations can accept Everyday Rewards or not accept Everyday rewards, but you’ll never know until the cashier rejects your card

Ampol stations that do accept Everyday Rewards may only award points but not accept the fuel discounts, but again, you’ll never know until you try and then get rejected

Some Ampol stations that do accept Everyday Rewards will both earn the points AND accept the fuel discounts as well, but these are as rare as rocking horse cough and if you find one, you should immediately buy a lottery ticket as well just in case

Some Ampol stations accept Ampol FuelPay phone app as well as Everyday Rewards points and Everyday Rewards fuel vouchers AND they also participate in Amex Offers as well, but these are basically unicorns and it’s easier to just assume they don’t actually exist in the real world.

Some Ampol stations (generally those that are not real Ampol stations, just branded Ampol) will accept Woolworths Gift cards for payment and others will not, but again you won’t find out until the gift card gets rejected and you find you can’t pay.

If that isn’t enough permutations, then there is also the payments methods to consider as well. Some Ampol stations will accept Amex and Diners Club cards, others will not. Some will surcharge for credit card use and others will not.

I basically give myself 30mins to work it all out before even starting the car. Buying fuel at Ampol is not something anyone should ever do on a whim or without significant advance pre-planning.

Get wellbeing app on phone. You literally do not need to do anything once set up and you will earn 1 point every few days

I've shuffled points in the past without issue.

I've stored those points in my brothers account. Towards end of August about 170,000 QFF points were expiring so I just bought a few litres of fuel at BP and points are active for another 18 months.

Since then I've been getting offers from BP. I thought the 10x points offer to a maximum of 500 points was a good one. I filled up 50 litres for 500 points.

Too slow, as you need 2000 EDR points to make 1000 QFF points.
Buying fuel at BP is the best stop gap measure, or anything at BP.
You can put Stocard on your phone, enter the members QFF #, buy something, even if just snacks, and it goes direct to QFF account, quite fast.
EDR is too slow, and EDR wont move any points to QFF until you get 2000 EDR points.
