my question is whether the extra 18 points is worth the extra 53 cents?
So ignoring a lot of earlier posts which went off-topic.
That is 2.94 cents per point.
As others have said it depends on how YOU are going to use the points.
* Economy redemptions will not achieve that = loss
* J/F can on the right airline be had for less than the point cost. Ditto for upgrades.
* However if you purely look at buying points then US Airways may be a better move.
( ie people on this forum report buying points for about $2k to gain a J to Europe. At 2.94 cents per point that will cost you $4-7 K depending on program and redemption).
* If it helps to top up other "free" points to gain an award then then that may be most useful to you.
Personally I am wary of claiming very high points per $ values on award redemptions as:
1/ If I actually had to buy the J/F flight I would look around and purchase a cheaper J/F most likely on a different airline.
Awards redemptions are highly restricted flights, and so comparing them to full-priced unrestricted ticket prices is IMO flawed thinking.
2/ There are from time to times various means of buying points on BMI (soon to go), AA, US Airways etc to deliver J/F travel at economy like prices.
my question is whether the extra 18 points is worth the extra 53 cents?
Not to me, as I can garner more points than I can use at a much lower cost.
