Worthless SQ codeshares - warning

On a positive note, some of the Full Economy earning classes on SQ are still reasonably priced, and can be a much cheaper option for gaining full economy Status Credits than VA or EY

I'm curious as to how SQ could reasonably make earnings on other airline programs visible during booking.... (think how many possibilities there are.. 28 *A plus other partners!)

I would have thought the first port of call when wanting to know THAT would be the relevant airlines OWN site...

Others may think differently, but after years of *A flying and crediting miles to different *A partners I've always found its easier to steer clear of booking code shares and book directly with the airline you're actually flying with. Generally that way its clear to see what the booking class is and exactly what you're entitled to in terms of earning on YOUR *A program (whatever that may be).

I've been burnt a few times booking AC metal as a UA codeshare. The UA booking class should have earnt but that wasn't the REAL booking class as what counted was the AC booking class (that I couldn't see). Very confusing.

I'm not sure its entirely the same in Virgins "Alliance" as I've only this year moved over to them, but I'll be trying to book direct with SQ on their metal and flight number should i need to so its clearer what I'm entitled to.

Just my 2c adjusted for inflation...

I recently booked SQ from Brisbane to coughet on a (W) class fare as the return price was about $400 cheaper than booking with VA.

The advantage to me was the price, and being able to choose my own seats. I could think of nothing worse than getting placed in the middle of the centre row of 4 seats.

The disadvantages I found out afterwards was I missed out on 60 status credits and 1214 points on the Silk Air leg of the flight Singapore to coughet RTN. I also missed my platinum 100% tier bonus of about 8850 extra points.

How would you have got a plat bonus when flying on SQ metal?

I thought the bonuses only applied to VA and some EY products?

How would you have got a plat bonus when flying on SQ metal?

I thought VFF works on the marketed flight rather than operating one (with some exceptions).

Had you booked the VA codeshare on SQ metal, it would fall under the VA earn table and VFF bonuses could apply. Same with EY operated codeshares.

Of course, sometimes it's tough to say the Platinum points load would be worth paying an extra $400...

Thats not my understanding of how it works. You get the points based on who you actually fly with - not who markets the flight. Or am I wrong here?

Based on Velocity's airline points earn page, my impression was the same as anat0l - VFF worked on the marketed flight. All the airline partners specifically start off their tables with a reference to the specific airline's fares and flights marketed with that airlines code only (rather than the VA flight number).

Also, under the Virgin Australia table, it specifically references operating airlines and sets conditions on some of them (eg. SQ's fare classes that earn zilch)....

Edit : I hope that's the way it works - based on that logic, I booked a trip later this year with mostly Etihad operated flights but on VA codeshares for the extra point % :P

Each time I have flown VA codeshare on Air NZ or on Singapore Airlines, I have received Velocity status bonus on points

If the flight is booked with VA you will get the bonus points.
I also booked my SIA flights under VA. Even though I did get the points and the bonus points, I didn't feel the whole code share process was running smoothly. Seat selection was a nightmare. Any preference known with VA is not known with SIA. Calling VA doesn't make a difference.
Had issues selecting my seat on the SIA flight when I tried to check in online. Only a few seats were available - and definitely not the best ones in the plane.
Even though I have Platinum Status I had a minimal choice of seats. Quite often continuing flights will be with Silk Air - and then no VA privileges apply (no priority boarding, check in etc.).
I don't know... I am hesitant to do this again. I know the bonus points are somehow worth it. However I also checked the fares, and the fares with VA were higher.
When I flew VA to New York in March I paid close to 1900 A$ for a return ticket.
My friend flew similar flights on DA metal and paid closer to 1300 A$. That is a massive difference, just to score some points???
He ended up in the same flights as me. He did get points and SC, only no bonus points.
I did get the bonus points, but if it was worth 600A$ is the question.

I think you are correct.. I have also found where you do not fly on VA metal, international flights booked via VA are a rather substandard affair and tend to leave a bitter taste in ones mouth.

If you look at the share register of VA, you would be forgiven for thinking we would get a better deal on some of the international partner carriers.. But no..
