WP asking Etiquette when flying International Y

whats it like in Y, been sooo long :p

Y is still whY?

But in the right seat on the A380 it's not too... bad! I've had worse experiences in J. But I'm a person who when flying Y does not have very high expectations (and I'm often proved correct) and when flying J/F has higher expectations (and I'm often under-whelmed).

only gagging, Y is fine on any flight under 10 hours IMHO

I personally would never ask for anything if I paid to be in Y. Anything extra is a bonus even with status.
Though only Gold with Virgin, my last Y flight to LAX, I was approached by the FA asking for my choice of meal prior to service starting, given a J amenity kit and asking if I'd like any wine (I don't drink alcohol)...I was appreciative and surprised.

I think even at WP status, if you go in with no expectations then anything extra offered by the FA's is a pleasant surprise...after all if you were travelling in F or J you would know what is to be expected.

If the question is "Anything I can get for you?" then what is wrong in asking for something. If I am asked then I ask for an amenity kit. I have been offered noise cancelling headphones and champagne in the past without asking.

I suspect FAs ask but hope you don't ask for much at all because there is not much they can give you without really pushing the friendship, and a J meal would be out of bounds IMHO - (and just imagine trying to set it on a Y tray, and the filthy looks from those nearby).
If anyone asks then simply say that you have a strict dietary requirement. No economy meals! ;)

2>, Noise Cancelling headphone
Come on, bring your own! I always pack one for the flight and I found I rarely use them nowadays.
I have my own now! ;) Do you think Qantas cabin crew would notice that it is one of theirs?

(I think I'm in a very small group of AFF'ers (maybe just me) that isn't much impressed with any "fizz" no matter how expensive it is! :)).
You are not alone. I think "bubbly" is one of the most overrated things on the planet and I have only ever encountered that enthusiasm for it by a few people on this board.

The single time I have travelled Y since becoming a CL I was offered (this is Y from SYD-SIN) a J blanket, pyjamas, amenity kit, wine and express passes for my family (plus all of the other perks). To be perfectly honest I felt really uncomfortable with the extra service but in order not to seem ungrateful I accepted. I think that it is grossly inappropriate to ask for a J meal. You have payed for Y and should not get anything major for J. I have a feeling that the reason so much was offered to me was because it was due to a scheduling conflict that I ended up in Y. It is so tacky IMHO to ask for stuff from J. Imagine, if you were on a school camp and you were asked if "You were alright with the meal?" and you requested a teacher's meal. It is out of place.

I think there's a case in this thread where people describe what they are comfortable in asking for, but people then use that benchmark as defining what other people ask for. I'd argue that what you're comfortable in asking for may not be the benchmark for everyone. If there question is "what are you reasonably likely to receive when you ask for something from the front cabins?" that's a more objective question, but telling people that they shouldn't ask for something, when they might be comfortable in doing so and they know that refusal might occur when they ask - why is that so bad?

Everyone is going to have different comfort levels in what they ask for. Just because someone asks for something you don't agree with does not make them bad people. If they DEMAND, that's another thing, but asking? What's the harm?

I always enjoy reading your posts, there is always a gem in there that makes me laugh. Not sure I have ever thought of J and Y as teachers and school kids though.

Easy for you to say, you're a CL. While the other kids are stuck on the coughpy old Ventura bus to school camp, you're getting driven there in a Audi A8 limo, and probably getting comped-up to a carpeted cabin with your own bathroom when you get there. ;)

The rest of us non-CL peasants sometimes have to ask for stuff... And risk being gauche and tacky.

Not really a valid comparison either.

Considering the FA's have at various stages bought me J Champers or amenity kits without my prompting, I believe it's perfectly ok to ask for them, providing you do it politely, don't ask for too much, and be friendly.

They are asking you if there is anything else they can do. A glass of champagne is discreet. An amenity kit not so much IMHO, and 95% of the time they are provided to me without asking.

It's also funny the constant mention of being a CL but that's just my 2c :)

Perhaps a good incentive for the Ventura School bus students to study harder and get somewhere in life!

Constant mention? It was in the post once ;)

I really think that it is a sweeping generalisation that non-CL's are peasants. I would also like to clarify that the example ment nothing other than to support my point. I had my far share of horrible school camps.

It's ok. I don't mind being classified as a peasant compared to CL's. Let's be honest here... The whole FF status model is built around a class-system more formalized and strictly adhered to than anything England ever produced. By accepting and benefitting from the status QF chooses to grant you, you're buying into a class system of have's and have not's.

This is fine. You just have to acknowledge that if you're a CL, it may be a sweeping generalization to say that other pax are peasants in comparison to yourself... but for all practical considerations it also happens to be true. Because they've designed it that way. Take the rewards of status, you also have to accept you've bought into a class system.

But you don't HAVE to accept the preferential treatment over ordinary passengers if you don't want. I'm pretty sure QF never forced a single person into the Chairman's Lounge.

(in this context, peasants is all in fun. We all know that real peasants fly Jetstar).

My 2c worth is that I side with the camp that believes that asking for something that cannot be provided by the hostie/steward is NOT harmless and OK - it is embarrassing for both parties. So IMHO I would always aim low and just ask for a G&T or whatever small item.

It is very rare for me now to fly whY but whenever I do it is on short hops and the last thing I want is for any fuss from staff ¨recognizing¨me in front of my fellow whY sufferers of the flight.

You fly the class you book and pay for. End of story. What you can do as a WP is top-up in the lounge prior to the flight. A bellyfull of Gentlemens Jack from the LAX first lounge used to help relax me for some PE flights to BNE.

.... if you're a CL, it may be a sweeping generalization to say that other pax are peasants.......

Not that I have any prospect of joining the CL world any time soon, but if I did, even if I did not express it, I would consider everyone else ¨peasants¨;)

When I've been travelling with non-WP peeps, the flight attendents have always given us all express passes - no point in me having one if I then have to wait ages for them to get through the queue, is there?!

Is that just for inbound flights to oz? say Oz to NRT, that wouldn't apply would it?

Nothing wrong with peasants, you could do badly without them in warcraft 1,2,3 :P

This horrible situation is also avoided by not flying in whY...

I was asked if I want anything recently in international J. About 7 hours after the flight I realised I should have asked for F bubbly.

- (and just imagine trying to set it on a Y tray, and the filthy looks from those nearby).

Like I care what other people think. I was recently in 71D and the guy in 71C asked me what I had to pay to get them to remove 70D. I just laughed.

Boarded flight SYD-WLG earlier tonight and did not get a personal greeting and did not ask for anything anyway. In fact crew were visible during meal service and not seen again until they started collecting the trays.l

Saw one of the FAs come from front galley before take-off with a glass of white wine covered with napkin so as to not attract attention. Most would not know what is going on. Did not look all the way back but she stopped around row 8-9 maybe a little further. Didn't ask and don't really want to know.
