WP perks when in whY

Flew QF SYD-HKG recently in Y as WP, asked for a glass of red from the Business class wines and flatly refused.

In fact, I find I get treated worse in Y as a WP than all other Status levels!

Still to this day never been Upgraded from Y, even domestically. Thought it might change when I cracked 3000 SCs last year but has not made a difference.

I don't know about quite often, but I'd say they are just occasional things. Very occasional.

The main benefits in Y as a WP are good seats (sans the exit rows, which are paid for), possible op-ups, possible greeting from FA/CSM, priority boarding etc. all the rest of the perks.

Or having a spare middle seat in a row of 3.

I was given the J kit and the PJs twice, but only after I had politely asked the CSM for them.

Was this after the CSD director came around to say hello to you at the beginning of the flight, and then asked "is there anything I can get you?" If so, I'm shocked:shock: but if you asked a random passing flight attendant who may not have known you are a WP, that I'm not surprised!

Excuse me, a WP sitting in Y is entitled to ask for wine from business class. Get real.

+1

I don't fly a hell-of-a-lot, but this "year" has seen me reach almost 2000SC's, and still no upgrade. I don't even think about it now, as it ain't going to happen. Mind you, a mate of mine (also a WP on full whY bucket tickets) has had around 10 upgrades this year.

CSM greeting is about 40% on QF for me (100% on CX), not that it really bothers me. Last Y flight I got a nice welcome from the FA who said the CSM would be around shortly, but they never showed. Meh, not a big deal.

I'll often ask for little things (NC headphones for my girlfriend, a glass of Noble One, a J blanket etc..) and have never been refused. Given the Noble One is in F only, I consider that a "3 class drink upgrade". Oh, and even when I don't get the CSM greeting, I usually always get the express immigration cards (last flight I got 8 of them! Great for giving to family and friends. :))

Most importantly though, on 3 of my last 4 LAX flights I've been op-upped from discount Y to J. :D (LAX-SYD, LAX-SYD, LAX-AKL-SYD - upgraded on both legs).

Won't get a chance to test the CSM greetings on my next trip though - back in the pointy end. :D

Cheers,
- Febs.

I have never asked for anything from a higher class of service - doesn't matter if I sit in Y or J.

Operational upgrades - never expect them. Honestly. Don't even think that you'll get two per year or whatever - no, expect zero, because it all comes down to the circumstances of the time and you can't really control that.

I've been lucky to have been given op-ups here and there, but the keyword is lucky.

Sorry to bust your bubble - but I believe it's now a 1 class upgrade. Noble One was on the drinks cart on my most recent SYD-LAX and vv flights in PE (July).

I enjoyed a glass of it before going to sleep in each direction :)

I only do the trip once or twice a year, so I'm not sure if it's now a permanent feature. My next planned trip across is in February, so I guess I'll find out then :)

Any passenger is entitled to ask for such and any FA is entitled to deny such a request (or not). Preferably, both the request and denial/affirmation would be done in a civilised pleasant manner.

Personally, I generally make such a request only only to the CSM during the greet. I have never been denied when doing so.

Hmm, might differ from flight to flight. On my last LAX-AKL (~2 weeks ago) I was upgraded to J, but when I asked for a glass they still had to get it from F.

That's possible.

Mine were on QF11/QF12 (SYD-LAX and vv).

I fly transpacific mostly in PE and the Flounge access, F bag tags and Express cards are very tangible perks indeed, in that they make a practical difference to my travel experience. The Flounge is a nice place to relax before a long flight especially now that they have Bolly, and I've never had to clear CIQ in more than 20 mins. The rest I can take or leave. I've never had the CSM greeting in PE before, but have actually been greeted personally a few times by the regular FAs in the PE cabin.

I never expect op ups, and indeed have never gotten them on QF. If you're still clinging to the faint hope of an op up may I suggest flying BA? I've never held status with BA but have now had 4 op ups with them - both as OW Sapphire and Emerald. :D

The CSM greetings in my experience are now very hit and miss and I have never asked for anything more than noise cancelling headphones and on a couple of occasions I have been given a glass of champagne from business class and another time given a business class amenity kit without asking.

Cannot understand why QF cannot ensure that express immigration cards are handed out to Platinums flying economy. On my last flight I asked for the express immigration card when they were handing out the arrivals cards and was told no problem. Did not see them go through the cabin with express immigration cards and I had to ask them again shortly before landing.

Losing the ability to pre-allocate exit row is a big disappointment and it would appear since the changes to advance seat selection it is almost impossible to get bulkhead seats pre-allocated on some flights.

I never expect to receive an op-up but in saying that I have been lucky in the last couple of years with op-ups. I think this year I have had 2 or 3 domestic op-ups SYD-BNE vv. which may well be more than most people get in a year but to me it is no big deal on such a short flight.

There was F on LAX-AKL?

Heh, yeah I just realised what I typed and came back here to clarify. They said "we'll have to go get it from up the front" which at the time my tired brain translated as "F". But no, it was a 2 class flight, so I guess they were serving it in J. :)

Perhaps because its not a published benefit of the Qantas program or something Qantas control.

Dessert wine is served on (all?) international flights, including Trans-Tasman, and possibly Perth CityFlyer, in J or F (where applicable). I had some on my last BNE-HKG flight (thankfully op-upped by QF from Economy (V) to J at check-in).

The dessert wine served could vary on route and flight, but here is what I got when I flew BNE-HKG in J in May:

Definitely De Bortoli but not Noble One.

The dessert wine offered in F on my two F flights - SYD-SIN and BKK-LHR - were Lillypilly Family Reserve Noble Blend 2002 and Bellarmine Riesling Auslese 2007, respectively.

In fact, the only place where I've been able to get Noble One with QF is in the SYD and MEL F lounge, where it has been the stalwart dessert wine for as long as I can remember.

Back on topic, FWIW one time I had a rather enthusiastic CSM flying Jetconnect MEL-AKL and I was in Y. He came up to me after the seat belt signs were off and we had a nice little conversation. I think I tickled his fascination when I remarked that we were on one of the last 737-400s in the Jetconnect fleet (well, they're still there!), but one without refreshed livery. He offered me a drink (including from J - I had to clarify this one with him) and I took champagne (not all that exciting - just Charles Heidsieck Brut). The key here is that I was offered; I didn't ask for anything at all.

I have a 100% CSM greeting rate in Y+. About a 50% express card rate. This as PS/SG.

Have also had Noble 1 in Y+.

OK... they must hate me then! I get the greeting from the minions (my seatmates don't get the same greeting so i figured it's a elite status thing) but not the CSM. :p And it's only happened on QF73/74, never on QF93/94. I don't like dessert wine or any kind of fortified wine so will probably turn down the Noble 1 even if offered - but I do wonder if I can hint at swapping it for F champers.......
