Does anyone know whether it is possible to request the release of a First seat and if it is, whether anyone has been successful in securing one?

It's most certainly possible as a WP. I've done exactly that on several occasions over the last few years, usually for 2 seats. It seems a bit harder to request when the flights are a long way into the future, but we've had good success having seats opened up for flights leaving within the next 2 weeks.

Thanks for that info! I've never thought of asking mainly because when we go to the request stage of the call, the rep always asks "business or premium?"

Definitely possible and in my experience much more likely to come through than a request for Business. Good luck!
