WP1... what should it offer?

If the WP1 benefits were awesome wouldn't you consider putting your 240 usual flights all on the QF and partners?

You've misread what I wrote. I'd (I would) have to do 240 flights, not I do 240 flights. It is physically impossible for me to do that many flights, unless I give up my family time. But that is still only 150 days a year.

Now as my salary increases over the next couple of years I can/will increase my airfare spend to more flexible fares. But still not enough for 3600 SC and I am enjoying DJ so increased spend is better put into maintaining status with them. Especially as jumping one fare level up from red-e-deals cost double for the same status, whereas double spend gives double status on DJ.

Yeah I misread... sorry about that... I do understand what "I'd" means i was skim reading so yes I missed it, no need to put it in bold is there?

Now taking a step back, what would QF have to do to stop you from spending those extra flights on Virgin? maybe that is a better direction for this conversation? Lets face it you'd put flights to DJ anyway and you'll work to get WP each year anyway as well...

Should I just send Qantas my copy of Up in The Air?

I'm sitting on 2000ish SCs, so won't make P1, but I wouldn't turn down a shiny card with a personalised phone number on the back. :p

And once you cross the 3600sc mark, do you get thrown a small party onboard? :p

Can you tell I watched this movie today?

Oh, sorry on the bold - only did it because I'd is easy to miss when skim reading - assumed that is what happened.

What would it take? I'm not sure. I'm putting flights to DJ now because to get lounge access on the occasions that I fly with DJ - bit of a chicken and egg proposition. This is something that is due to ATA removal. ATA made me only consider QF when looking at flights. To get me back then Platinum would have to offer something vastly better than gold. I guess my financial situation would have to improve to the point that 2400SC becomes viable. 2100 SC was just viable. Another thing would be to address the inability to have my whole family (immediate wife and kids family) in the lounge with me.

I am looking forward to seeing what happens with the next round of Platinum/Platinum one announcement.

Makes sense, sometimes you need access from a different airline. Didn't you have a Amex Plat but for PP? Can't remember who gave me the advice in the CC thread. But yes this is also a key reason why I spin the AirNZ flights.

Yes I'm looking forward to the next round of announcements for P but I suspect (possibly naively...) that I'm waiting for it quite optimistically while you have your reservations.

Was thinking one thing QF could do for this "ultra tier" would be to base the accrual on a 12 month period - not the membership year. After all 3600 SC's in 12 months is a lot whether it coincides with the membership year or not, and much more difficult to game the system at this level than the lower tiers.

I've only made the move to MR recently, so no plat charge card. But have got a plat Amex credit card. Before that I was happy to collect QF points.

I'd say I'm optimistic, especially with Red Roo's comments on what to expect. But also expect to be disappointed.

I'm curious to know how many people do you think would go north of 3600 on a regular basis. Based on the fact they have around 8 million members

I'll hazard a guess that it's a few thousand, say 3-8000, which is less than 0.1% of FF members (of roughly 8 million).

My guess is based on a rough estimate that the top 200 FFs would earn 7000+ SCs pa, so a distribution would yield a few thousand members at the 3600 range. Which means that there may be a further say 20,000 members within "striking" distance, and if a percentage of those people think "hey I only need x more flights to hit P1" then Qantas wins. And then there may be others who fly multiple carriers who may feel incentivized to just throw a few more flights Q's way to hit P1. Again Q wins.
