Just thought I'd start this thread to discuss suite night upgrade strategies. For those unfamiliar, when you earn Platinum status on Accor you earn 2 suite night upgrade (SNUs) awards which let you book a suite for the price of a (often) substantially cheaper base room. You also earn additional SNUs for every 4000 status points earned after that point (up to 12 per year). These suite night upgrades expire the year after you earn them. So for instance, in 2022 I became Platinum and earned 2 SNUs. Those awards will therefore expire on December 31, 2023.
Now that I've covered the bases of the SNU program, I thought I'd discuss some strategies for optimizing them:

Now that I've covered the bases of the SNU program, I thought I'd discuss some strategies for optimizing them:
- Although SNUs have a specific expiry date, that expiry date applies only to when you are making the booking. Put differently, I could make a booking on December 30, 2023 for a stay in 2024 despite the SNUs expiring on December 31, 2023
- If you cancel a booking made with an SNU before the SNU expires it'll be redeposited into your account in a couple minutes
- If you cancel a booking made with an SNU after the SNU expires it'll be forfeited
- If you earn Platinum status in consecutive years, it is possible to have 4 SNUs to burn for a future booking, which is important since not all of us earn tons of status points (but do have the nights to show for Platinum)
- When you re-qualify for Platinum status, Accor may not automatically deposit those SNUs in your account. If it's been more than week and they haven't appeared use the webform to follow up with them since you want them in your account ASAP, especially if you've got SNUs from last year you want to combine into a long booking
- Not all SNUs are created equal. A quick search on the Accor site will show you that the savings from applying an SNU vary wildly depending on where you stay. In some instances, applying an SNU might save you $100 in a night, whereas at other hotels and in other markets the savings can be considerable (i.e. hundreds of dollars per night). Ideally you want to apply the SNUs to properties where you get the most value but remember a used SNU is better than an expired one!
