Your 2024 year of travel in review

Longtime lurker…thought year in review would be a great way to introduce myself to the AFF community. So, here are my 2024 stats, relatively fewer segments than most, but substantial distance travelled thanks to plenty of long and ultra long hauls:
  • 29 flights (2 J)
  • 145,168 kms travelled
  • 8 countries visited
  • New airports: DXB, OPO, MXP, LIN, BOS
  • New airlines: EK, UX, EI, TO, DL
  • Best new lounge: AF JFK T1, got in 2 x using PP and was pleasantly surprised, great ambiance and decor, great food and most importantly champagne to boot! Must be one of the very few PP lounges with self-pour real champagne (didn’t realise until after my visits that Clarins also has complementary facials in the lounge)
  • Worst new lounge: OPO ‘airport lounge’ (PP) - no air conditioning, no bathrooms, bad food and drinks
  • Most surprising good flight: UA EWR-ORD, United has really improved a lot since the days pre-covid
  • Most underwhelming flight: NZ1, more than half empty but disallowed use of empty rows for sleep as weight restrictions between cabins were in place, 787 on NZ also very hard and uncomfortable for a 17 hour flight, food was the worst i’ve had on long haul
and welcome to posting more on AFF

  • Total Flights: 32 (21 Y, 2 PE, 9 J) covering 98,820 km.
  • Countries Visited: Just 3, with 16 of the flights comprising SYD-MEL and MEL-SYD. Three trips to the USA, and one quick holiday in NZ.
  • New Airports: MSY, AUS
  • New Airlines: AS, WN. Southwest was certainly an experience with their lack of assigned seating.
  • New Aircraft Type: 787-9
  • Best Flight: Nothing really comes to mind. Flights to the US were a mix of QF economy, premium and business. Premium was probably the best experience relative to expectations.
  • Worst Flight: Probably QF123, SYD-ZQN, which was cancelled after we had boarded due to a navigation system issue. Handled very well by Qantas, with accommodation at the airport arranged for us (despite SYD being my home port) and meal vouchers.

Total Flights 91

- Work 31 ( J=16, Y=15 with most of the Y being on small regional aircraft )

- Leisure 60, all J with 24 International and 36 domestic.

- Countries visited 12, no new ones

- New Airports, KKN and SHJ

- New Airlines, none but first long haul on Vistara and first long haul on Air France for decades but wanted to try their new product.

- Best flight, The QSuites were great as usual but overall I’d have to say UK DEL-CDG gets the gong. Comfortable seats, fantastic crew and probably the best airline food I’ve tasted.

- Worst flight, EK DXB-BOM. Very rare for me to have a bad EK experience but old and tired J seating with a broken seat, unattractive staff and what I would describe as slops for a meal.

- Best lounge, Doha Al Safwa comfortably. Both times through there I over indulged and struggled to board the aircraft.

- Some honourable mentions and random thoughts. The AF seat I had on the 777 was quite possibly the best J seat I’ve had, shame about the rest of the product. Had an excellent fifth freedom flight on KL DPS-SIN that was dirt cheap.
Overall a pretty decent year with no major flight changes or disruptions and just your general delays.

My stats for 2024

  • Number of flights: 54 (34Y, 1PE, 19J). I still have 5 flights left. (3Y, 2J).
  • Countries visited: 10 (3 new)
  • New airports visited: TPE, ICN, GMP, KCH, DFW, DCA, LGA, YYZ, BUF, ORD, SEA, YVR (KUL soon)
  • New airlines flown: AA, AK, D7, EK, AS
  • New aircraft type flown: A220, A321N, E175,
  • Most aircraft type flown: B738
  • Best flight: J on CX, although we'll see if JL36 upcoming will beat it.
  • Worst flight: QF to ICN. In flight itself was regular QF but we were delayed at the gate (after boarding) for 2.5h which caused us to miss the last trains out of ICN and get scammed by a taxi driver.
  • Still have a SYD - MEL - KUL - SIN - HND left right before the end of the year (KUL - SIN - HND) will be starting a new OWA.
  • Nov 2023 was my partner's first time flying J ever in her life and now shes done 17 this year and a F flight (i was in J). This was mainly from a OWA we already completed this year.
Let's add 737 Max8 to new plane types

Flights:
- Brisbane-Sydney, Qantas business 737
- Sydney-Singapore-London, Qantas economy A380
- Paris-Helsinki-Singapore, Finnair economy E190/A350
- Singapore-Brisbane, Singapore economy A350
- Brisbane-Sydney, Virgin economy 737
- Sydney-Wuhan-Xi'an, China Eastern economy A330
- Xi'An-Beijing Daxing-Hangzhou, China Eastern economy A320
- Nanjing-Sydney, China Eastern economy A330
- Sydney-Brisbane, Qantas economy 737

Countries visited (including flights): England, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Singapore, China.
  • Worst flight: Finnair Helsinki to Singapore. Middle seat. Old mate on the aisle didn't move once for 14 hours. Got longer legroom seats, but it just wasn't worth it - with seats reclined and old mate not moving, basically felt trapped. Hot cabin, no individual air vents. Cabin crew were absent all flight outside of meals. Cabin dimmed entire flight. It was hell.
  • Best flight: Singapore Airlines to Brisbane. I think I ate an entire pizza. And I looove pizza.

I didn't think there was such a thing as "too much flying", but this year I believe I've reached my limit!
126 segments (would have been 130, but the recent earthquake in Vanuatu killed that last trip).
309,845 miles (498647 km), 28 days 10 hours in a metal tube!
Cabin flown: 28Y, 1W, 96J, 1F
New airports: IPC, YQB, cough
Other stats: 43 airports, 12 carriers, 16 countries

Looking at the stats and wondered why I had 17 * SYD-MEL flights but only 16 * MEL-SYD flights. I then remembered my last MEL-SYD flight was QF426 on the 3/12 that was diverted MEL-ADL then cancelled and subsequently flew ADL-SYD

As the years pass by my travel continues to decrease 😥. Especially in retirement as they are all self funded nowadays

The count of cities and distance travelled is actually much higher but not recorded by tripit.

Flights: 42 (18 J, 1 W, 23 Y)
Total Distance: 63,450 mi

Most flown airline: VA (19)
Most flown aircraft: 73H (22)

New aircraft: 35K, 78J, 7M8
New airlines: CI, MU, AF, MH, TR, PR, AB

Best flight: CI BNE-TPE (then TPE-LHR). Very impressed with both hard & soft product
Runner up: QR BRU-DOH & DOH-ICH (Qsuites)
Worst flight: JQ MCY-MEL

Strange moment: AF BHX-CDG. Asked if they had wine and told, no, we have beer. I was thinking, are you sure you're French?
Strange moment #2: Flying OOL-MQL on Bonza operated by Flair. Just a strange situation with a Canadian airline operating a domestic route for a doomed local operator

Here are my stats for 2024:
Number of flights: 11 all Y
Countries visited: 5 (1 new)
New airports visited: ARN
New airlines flown: Air Serbia (operated by GetJet)
New aircraft type flown: -
Best flight: PEK-ARN Air China a350 in Y but with an empty seat on each side of me.
Worst flight: DOH-ADL Qatar a350 the space in this Y seat was less than Air China even when I didn’t have an empty seat each side of me. Dishonourable mention to the food on JQ BNE-ICN and the return, I would have been embarrassed if my old petrol station served food of that quality.

A poor travel year for me, less than half the number of flights taken than in 2023.

1735822803717.png

All self funded:
  • only 20,917 miles flown
  • only 14 Flights (10 Business, 4 Economy)
  • only 49 hours flying time. Longest flight SYD-HNL, shortest OOL-SYD
  • only 3 Counties visited, none new
  • only 6 Airports of which 1 was new (DRW)
  • only 1 airline
