A few months ago I noticed that ALL of the classic award business class seats dried up on SYD-LAX and SYD-Dallas. Even when booking 350 days in advance, I can no longer find a single seat in business class.

Before this, it was quite common to see 2 or even 3 seats available on a direct flight provided I got in early enough.

Does anyone know if Qantas has changed their policy?

I am only a bronze member so perhaps others with better status can see available seats?

My goal is to fly our family of six to the USA in mid May 2017. I was hoping to book business class seats for my wife and I, but based on the current zero availability that is looking doubtful.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You could try SYD-NAN-LAX if you are willing to give FJ a try. One advantage is lower taxes, etc which are $119.67 in J. There is presently reasonable availability in March 2017.

Thank you for that tip grussellt. I hadn't realised the taxes were so much lower with FJ. I'll look into it.

CX have cheap taxes too (compared to QF)
A longer flight,via HKG, and more points.Arguably a better J product
But good availability generally for up to 4 J per flight.
CX release at about 360 days

Note QF are starting to release to Bronze albeit a bit later than previous, if you have a look in Feb leading up tp the 15th or so (largely via BNE)

thanks cjd. I have just read through the entire other thread. Looks like there may be some hope.
