Well, after saying for a while that I have been lucky flying with TT, I've finally got affected by Tiger claw today.
I had the shortest trip ever today.
My better half and I had a flight booked for SYD-ADL on TT this morning to visit my relatives this long weekend (Labour Day). We drove to airport and parked at Long Term Parking. We arrived at airport, and went straight through to security because we had web check-in and also no checkin bags. We had some food at a cafe at airport before proceeded to the gate.
Once arrived at the gate we noticed it was very empty. Upon asking the staff and found out the the flight was cancelled due to engineering issues. There was no updates on board that it was cancelled, and only later it was announced.
Of course we went back to TT checkin who said the earliest available flight for SYD-ADL is next Wednesday (!!!). The best thing they can do is to give us a form for refund for the flight affected, and say check Jetstar and Virgin Blue for available flight to ADL.
I asked them what about my flight back from ADL-SYD on Monday, would that be refunded? Of course they said that our return flight on Monday would be unaffected so no. We told them how on earth are we going to get that flight if they cannot even fly me to ADL at the first place. They just say that the tickets will be refunded and will be 3-6 weeks. They also said that if you are non-Sydney resident, they would provide hotel up to $120 value per night affected (what hotel would you get for $120 in Sydney?!).
I proceeded to the virgin Blue sales and found the earliest flight was 3:10pm for $479. I asked about Premium Economy anyway and it was $519. Of course it is too
expensive so we just decided to go home.
So we went back to the Long Term car park and contacted Hilton to cancel my Hilton Adelaide booking and it was done without penalty (mine was Best Weekend Ever booking). Likewise for Hertz car hire from ADL airport. We paid $25 to exit the car park and went to city to see a doctor, had lunch, did some grocery and went home.
I also called my relatives and friends the news and tell them I will look at flights to come down to ADL at another time.
After getting home I found out that Tiger is still selling seats for tomorrow (at very expensive rates), even though they said earlier that first flights available is next Wednesday. Either they are over selling, or the person was lying just to put us off from geting later flights.
Luckily though this trip is not critical for us. I overheard another couple who had their Melbourne flight cancelled but it was part of their connection to Bali (!!!) and they are stressing out how to get there. I do feel sorry for them and hopefully they have travel insurance.
Ironically, it was a trip to see my relative who is going through chemo, and given that my partner and I have been sick earlier this week, this becomes not so bad afterall. I was going to abandon the trip anyway because I don't want to pass my sickness to her. But we decided to go even though we are not fully recovered, and Tiger "helped" to stop us seeing her. Maybe it is fate.
So my next steps would be to fill up the Tiger refund form, and also contact the bank to create a dispute on my Debit card for service not provided by Tiger. Well I knew the flight is full so they had 180 affected passenger form to process, so now the wait begins for refund.
Of course I knew about the risks of Tiger, and have flown them over 5 occassions and all worked OK, with cheap prices (cheapest I paid was $19 SYD-ADL one way and it was great). This time unfortunately Tiger claws has finally come on me and that's why I am still in Sydney rather than in Adelaide.
Oh well, my happy experiement with Tiger is finally over. Now it is time to go back to Qantas (just got my entitlement on my free QF flight on QF Ultimate Amex), or Virgin Blue (if I trust their New Skies reservation system) which I will have lounge access thanks to the free VS Gold earlier this year. I will still avoid Jetstar domestic given my past experience of delays, but now Tiger has been added to the "to avoid list". Time to start looking at qantas.com and virginblue.com.au ......
Now it is time to do some rest and some gardening, providing that Sydney does not rain for the next 2 days.
