Silver and Gold members can apply 24 hours before the flight for a free upgrade to Comfort Plus (depending on availability obviously), and Platinums can apply 72 hours out.

I have two questions and I'm wondering if anyone here has experience and can answer?

1. How exactly do I do this? On the Delta website? Or on an app? Currently on the Delta website, the flights all have "NOT COMPLIMENTARY UPGRADE ELIGIBLE" written on them... so this would change at T-24 and say "eligible" or something and I click on that and voila that's all I have to do?

2. Is the upgrade timing for the flight, or for the beginning of travel?
EG I can't get a direct flight to my destination, so I have one flight at 2pm and another at 6pm.
At 2pm the day before, I want to apply for my upgrades - can I only apply for the first flight then, and then I'd need to log into Delta again at 6pm to apply for the other leg upgrades?

Many thanks in advance for advice from anyone who's done this!

Firstly make sure that you VFF number is linked with the DL flight booking.

In my experience, the night before the flight I open up the Delta app and view the seat selection. By that time the Comfort Plus seats should be open for selection.

When checking in at the airport they may ask you whether you wish to be upgraded (if there is still availability).

:) The comfort plus seats are already available for selection.... they cost :)
I'd prefer not to leave the free upgrade to the check-in desk, because I'd be unlikely to get the upgrade then... if I can magically click a button somewhere at T-24 to get it, then I'd like to.
If nobody else has done this and knows the answer then I'll just try a few things and report back on my success

You are all doing better than me. Delta don't even see me as a WP, claiming my number is not there. VA tell me it is. Delta's phone crew say "call VA" (yep, done that). Delta.com won't even let me search for my flight. Pretty annoying but I guess I just keep harrassing them all.

so T-24 if there are any EC+ seats left, the tab where it used to say a $ amount will now show "free"

im WP but found the EC seats+ only went free on the DL site at T-48. Main routes were all gone by this time ( LAX-JFK ) but managed to get them on the less popular routes.

Well there goes my next question.

I should have know better to think the LAX-JFK route would have a magical parting of the coach class seats with a centreline straight towards EC+...........

I've flown LAX-JFK on DL as VA gold and just done normal seat selection via the Delta app/website. Upgraded both times.

Do you have the Delta booking reference?

If so you can check/edit ypur velocity number online.

Do you have the Delta booking reference?

Possibly this is what I'm missing. I only have the 13 digit 'ticket number' listed on VA itinerary. I quoted this to Delta over the phone, you might think they would advise 'that is not a valid reference' but no. Any idea where I get Delta's reference from?

If you ticket includes the DL flights (on a VA code), then you should be able to input your VA booking reference (a 6 letter code) into the DL website, along with your first and last names as per the ticket. It should then bring up your flights, and that page should have the Delta booking reference in it.

Ask your travel agent if you used one. If you booked by VA, give them a call and ask for the DL record locator.

As mentioned above, if you really want Comfort + (and not a middle) pay at the time of booking. Of course, the other option is to check out the price difference to first class. I just booked a flight from the midwest to LAX (on my way home) and First was only about $120 more -- also resulting in 120SC's.

AWESOME! That's exactly the info I was hoping for :) Perfect, thank you I will do that.
Really looking forward to my upcoming Miami trip, and hoping that I will be able to nab some Comfort Plus seats in both directions, fingers crossed :)

+1

Do not discount this option - these days DL are looking to maximise revenue for their First cabin, rather than fill the seats with upgraded elites ... you'd be surprised how little the cost can be.

Not quite sure who you and newmarket were speaking to (me or some of the other posters who were mentioning problems they're having), but I've already booked my tickets so not after any advice on booking classes? Just the advertised perk with Velocity status...

i once got an upgrade to first from LAX to SEATAC for $21 USD. (cant recall what the original fare was)

Hmmmmmm I'm not quite sure how I managed this, but I just logged in to Delta website to review seating plans and flight loadings for this trip (it's not until April) and on leg 4 of a 5-leg itinerary, the Delta Comfort+ seats were bookable.... FREE? Legs 2 and 3 (also on Delta) are still showing an upgrade cost for Comfort+ but leg 4 clearly said free....

So I've upgraded on that leg (which was nice, it was a 5.5hr ATL-LAX flight) so yay for free entertainment, exit row, wider seat and free alcohol for 5 hours :)

Hmmmmmm..... wonder if I can re-create the bug on the other two legs.... off to fiddle! :)

For VA Golds and Platinums should the Sky Priority Icon show up on their booking when looking it up on the Fly Delta App?

It's a tip, just like we share on this forum.

For example I had a booking AUS-LAX for last January in economy on DL that cost USD79. I was checking seating and saw an offer to upgrade for US45 (I had seen previous offers for much more). I chose to accept the offer, so I traveled in front of C+, had a meal with complimentary drinks and earned an additional 45 SC's for ~AUD$60.

Does it only show during the check-in window? I added my number over a week ago and it still doesn't show.
