Silver and above benefit on Delta - free Delta Comfort Plus seats

So I booked my LAX - JFK flights. 260USD pp each way. OK price I guess, unfortunately the day I fly in all the reward availability was gone due to the memorial day holiday...

My next question is. I am platinum VA, my partner is red VA. I booked us on the same itinerary. Can I upgrade us both to comfort+ at T-72 hours?

Another observation is that I can see a paid option to upgrade to C+ for 19USD pp one way. I can also see Sky Priority and Not Complimentary Upgrade Eligible and down lower Platinum Medallion / Elite Plus

You sure can. Also your VA WP luggage allowance on DL , is the same for all people on your booking

Sweet, thanks for the info. I notice on the app I can see the number of seats remaining in C+. So I guess if the seats are running out I can pay for the upgrade. The flights are 10 months away so I don't think it's worth worrying about it now.

It might depend on what routes you're flying, but in my experience I've rarely had trouble snagging a C+ seat a night or two before the flight through the app. If you forget, normally they'll offer you an upgrade when you and your partner check in at the airport (if available).

Depends on the route, but the upgrades are few and far between now. Just buy the W class ticket - theybare often only a few dollars more and lots of sc's.

Well the route is Los Angeles to New York over the Memorial Day Holiday (National Holiday)... I think I'm getting an understanding of the risk/reward.

Ah. I'd say no chance!!

Seriously though if you care about SC's buy the seats and don't count out first class - there are often very cheap deals. Great value.

On this particular route, first class is 1500USD and comfort plus is going to be 280USD. I guess the transcontinental flat beds command a premium price..

I only had the points to book business MEL - LAX, so LAX - JFK will have to slum it in C+.

Consider my questions answered. Thank you all.

Agree... $19 per person each way is very good value ... and you'll earn 3 x the SC's if original booking was discount economy.

For some reason they even reduced the price to 16 usd pp one way. So I paid for W like a sucker.

My next question is I noticed that some of the domestic flights, eg. new york to chicago are operated by a third party.

I suspect these flights are eligible for VA points/SC. Can anyone confirm or deny ?

I found this;

Earn Points with Delta Air Lines when you travel in an eligible fare class on flights with a DL flight number operated by Delta Air Lines, Delta Connection-branded carriers or Virgin Australia.
Find out more about Delta Connection Carriers.
You can also earn Status credits on all eligible fare types.

As long as it's under a DL flight number you'll earn the SCs and points, I know I did last time I flew on a Delta Connection.

And sometimes they are even a few dollars LESS. In about 2 weeks I'll be flying DL YYZ-JFK in W booked a few weeks ago. W was $30 pp cheaper than Y.

Hoping I get an upgrade to Comfort Plus when I check in today.

On a side note - is comfort plus worth paying for? It's coming up at $139USD for my Syd - LAX flight.

Are you flying DL? I don't know about the new VA economy plus or whatever they call it.

Anyway, I probably would pay it. Of course it's up to you on what else you'd with the money.

On a side note, I tried the new VA Premium from LAX to BNE the other day. I like the old Premium economy better.

Can you elaborate further? I haven't travelled in the new premium economy, what did you prefer about the old premium economy?

of course the old one was usually empty!

They've reused the old seats which is ok, but it doesn't work with the extra legroom. The limited recline combined with the extra legroom means that I found it difficult anchor myself - no good place to put my feet to stop from sliding out of the seat.

The toilets are at the back of the cabin and are freely used by economy PAX == more waiting.

Finally the Premium larder is now just a fridge in the wall behind the right hand seats. Poor selection and not even the little walkway to stretch in.

That said it beats economy but I'm thinking about trying AirNZ next time.

Yes, flying DL. Good news is I got a comp upgrade to Delta Comfort Plus today - it was showing as comp upgrade not available, but then went I went into change seat selection it allowed me to take a Comfort + seat for no charge . I called Delta to check, and they confirmed I am now seated in Comfort +.

I flew Sydney to LAX on Delta a few weeks ago - getting a free upgrade to Comfort Plus. I used the managed my booking facility on the Delta website and at T-24 hours I was able to move myself to a comfort plus seat for no additional charge.

It's a good benefit - comfort plus is by no means 'premium', but you certainly get better seats. Slightly more pitch, front of economy cabin, but that was about it. No difference in food and snacks that I could see. One great thing I found on Delta was that to connect to the Inflight WIFI on your phone (and Ipad) is completely free (You have to pay to connect to larger devices).

Delta will always be a budget airline in my eyes, but this velocity benefit makes a difference.

Of note, I did have a connecting delta flight from LAX to SFO (and was checked all the way thru) but they weren't able to honour my upgrade online, on the phone, at Sydney airport or LAX. Not worth complaining about for such a short flight - but it should have been available according to the Ts & Cs.

Looks like they have changed this as of the 19th of September - I used to be able to pre-select my comfort plus seat now I have to 'opt-in' to a waitlist but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do so.

The guy in the Sky Club lounge felt sorry for me and gave me exit row for free - must be something to looking ragged after 15 hours of flying already!

Yep. Just tried dummy booking and wasn't allowed to select a seat in the comfort+ zone. Maybe you have to call it in?

Otherwise it's just collateral damage now that Delta has made an upgrade queue for their medallion members to comfort+... And thus another reason for not motivating anyone to gain Platinum status. :(
