Airport set for $50m upgrade

TOWNSVILLE airport is set for a $50 million upgrade to cater for the city's rapid growth. It will include doubling the size of the Qantas lounge, adding a Virgin lounge over part of the international terminal and more retail and seating in transit areas along the terminal building facing the tarmac, currently taken up by disused office space.

Owner Queensland Airports Ltd is also looking to capitalise on the opportunities presented by the mining boom and to make better use of its assets, particularly the main terminal building.

Hardly a surprise that DJ has its sights on a lounge in Townsville.

Makes sense, and putting it in the international area is the only real option they have space wise.

Does make sense. Will be the same config I'd expect as the Mackay lounge - and that seems like a good blueprint for future smallish regional lounges.

Good stuff DJ!

I hope they aren't identical! That would be a bit original.

Good news! :D

I'm all for CNS too but I fear that's it's a long while off (if ever) given its status as a leisure port

Sir, as someone who grew up in North Queensland... them's fighting words. But being born in the correct end of NQ - ie Townsville, I wholeheartedly agree with you .

What about OOL, thats pretty much a leisure port, and they got one.

Good news! :D

Your missing a key factor, the Alliance flights, FIFO is where the money is and lounges are the bait.

They're operating ex CNS too, I think. I'm not sure if there's room for DJ lounge. Maybe adjacent to QF lounge, up the escalator.

Hope they can put a few extra bucks in and put a toilet in.

Mky has no toilet

Yes but nowhere near the extent of TSV, factor in ISA flights ex TSV and the fact 1 in 4 visitors is on business at TSV versus 1 in 5 at CNS it really is a no brainer.

There have already been published reports that CNS airport and Virgin Australia are talking about a lounge.

There is a very nice space for a VA loung opposite the QC in CNS. Fifo flights are not operated by VA so why should this influence th introduction of a lounge.

Virgin do FIFO (Rio Tinto recently gave them a contract, locally we already see FIFO into MOV on the ATRs):

and are very much looking at expanding this market, which is behind their stated investment into Skywest, and one of the reasons they built the OOL lounge:

Virgin keen for Gold Coast FIFO hub Local Business | goldcoast.com.au | Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia

There is already a large FIFO community flying commercially to DRW from TSV on Tuesdays with a return on Wednesdays, lounge access is seen as a right for such workers when it comes to selecting the positioning flights, most FIFO traffic is still on public flights for the majority, as those workers spread far and wide heading home.

Ah now this is good to hear - any predictions (or knowledge...) of a timeframe? And I wouldn't think CNS would be too much further down the track in terms of Lounge locations. Given all the capitals are covered (either by current Lounges, or announced locations), as are the other larger ports (MKY, OOL)...where next?

...where next?
The current timeframe for new lounges is.

CBR, (2012) MEL & SYD INTL (early 2013), HBA(2013), DRW(2013), PER (2014).
Add TSV to that and it becomes pretty capital intensive, maybe CNS will have to wait a little bit.
