Re: The totally off-topic thread

Value * 1.1 = +GST
Value / 1.1 = -GST
Yes you are correct. - but - 5 key strokes if I count correctly for both calculations.

What I am after is a GST calculator where there is 1 key stroke for GST+ and GST-

I have no idea where this discussion has come from  But GST+ should be something you can do in your head. A RPN calculator will cut it down to 4 keystrokes. Otherwise excel spreadsheet.

OK last night I posted in this thread the following:

Do any of you learned people's know of a downloadable desktop GST calculator?

Flashware then responded to my post.

As he was typing his response my 19yo tech guru (Who incidentally formerly worked on an advisory IT body to the KRUDD when he was PM) leaned over my shoulder and whispered - 'I found you a calculator online today - check your task bar - it is pinned there').

So I deleted my original post hoping nobody had responded. However it was to late and responses appeared.

I then checked the calculator on desktop and it does not do what I want.

Below is a CASIO calculator I have on my desktop - see the GST- and GST+ buttons to top right hand corner. But it is coughbersome - gets borrowed - takes up space - I want a similar desktop calculator with most of the normal calculation facilities but cannot find one.

Ah yes we can all do simple GST calculations in our heads - some more complicated than others - but I want a desktop calculator.

Sorry for confusing readers by removong original post.

Thanks for explaining. I'm easily confused.

As he was typing his response my 19yo tech guru (Who incidentally formerly worked on an advisory IT body to the KRUDD when he was PM)

Was it a good or bad decision to get him on the advisory board.

Written with a straight face: I'm not sure how adding 10% can get complicated. Sure GST- will need a calculator most of the time, but GST+ is always simple.

Anyway that doesn't help your quest, an excel spreadsheet with 4 cells showing in the corner of your desktop?

Yes adding 10% mostly simple - quick in your mind - GST exclusive price of Invoice amt $17,754.08?

Ah hah - not so simple - no cannot accept approx - need exact - yes I can use excel spreadsheet - but too coughbersome.

So I will ask the simple question again - Do any of you learned peoples know of a downloadable desktop GST calculator?

Clarification: I do not want to do GST calculations in my head / I do not want to use excel spreadsheet / inbuilt Windows calculator unsatisfactory.

Have a look at the GST Calculator here: Mayhem Development - Providing you with the tools required One of the better ones I've seen on my looking around, and a nice clean interface.

I can't verify that it rounds up/down properly (something you'd have to validate), but that is one option.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Thanks Mal - that certainly does the job. It's almost identical to what my IT guy got yesterday.

Ideally I would like a fully fledged desktop calculator with the GST facility included if available.

no pretty simple actually took about 5 seconds to do in my head; as an academic exercise that has no bearing on your quest.

Personally, it would have been quicker with windows calc, but you are opposed to keystrokes.

Anyway, the usual guru, Mal, of such questions has provided a solution.

I'm sure they are out there, but maybe not in the guise you're after. Some downloadable calculators allow you to create Macros to add extra functions. So you might be able to rename a key on the calculator to "GST+" and set up the macro, same for "GST-". Something for me to think about...

I've never seen such a calculator out there, both in the real world and electronically. (Your photo is the first time I've seen such a calculator).

Most people I know - clerks and the like - that need to calculate prices plus or minus GST simply use the "definitions", e.g. to add GST and get the grand total, multiply the amount by 1.1, or use the % key on the basic calculators (i.e. 500 + 10 %, which works on some).

I'd think you're better to cut your losses (no pun intended) and do it this way. On Windows 7, you can see calculation history above your calculator, so you can double check that you haven't made a mistake (in case you thought you hit the wrong number / key).

I wonder how those handheld calculators with GST+ and GST- keys cope if the rate of GST changes....

Another handy GST calculation tip: given a total amount, how can you determine the GST that was paid on it? Simply divide it by 11. For example, an item that cost $110 inc. GST has 110 / 11 = $10 of GST paid on it (with $100 ex-GST cost).

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Again thanks to everybody who has contributed but I do know what I want and guess I will just have to keep looking.

My father, being an accountant for 30 years has been using handheld calculators with the +/- GST ability for as long as I can remember. I don't think I've seen a software based one that has the same function. I'll ask.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Not a million but some days quite a few - and it's not only me who does them - we have a number of staff members who do them and accuracy is paramount - I cannot afford miscalculations by doing them mentally - it's just a facility we use on physical calculators and I thought one would be readily available.
