Looking for demographic info on Jetstar Business class passengers

After searching the web in vain for weeks - I've decided to try the expert user community instead

I need to find some demographic info on jestar business class and older stats on star class passengers for a uni assignment

i'm trying to test a hypthesis that the demo is changing from special occassion leisure travellers who had never or rarely travelled BC before - to a new market segment of occassional to regular BC travellers who will pay for BC seats for their own leisure travel

any ideas?

You might need a covering letter on your Universities letter head to request that the information is for a university assignment. That's no gaurantee they'll supply commercially sensitive data, but it does give credability to what you're trying to do.

no - it's changing - apparently more people who normally fly business class for professional travel are choosing to fly LCC businesss class for short-haul leisure - i'm trying to get the demo's to disprove the CUB "special occassion" travel theory

The 2011 databook was an interesting flick through. I'm sure the break up into business/ecnonony and business/leisure (how would they know anyhow? they dont ask when you book online) is commercially sensitive and wouldn't be easily published.

I'd suggest that the best data for a project like yours would be qualitative - and that the best way to get it would be to (after receiving ethics approval of course ) approach people checking in at the JetStar business counter and ask them a few questions about why they've chosen JetStar, their expectations about business class, etc.

You could just fabricate the data based the outcome you want to demonstrate, create a Wikipedia page as somewhat of a source to support the data and maybe set up some bogus websites that wiki can reference as a source. Maybe even create a fake user ID on Flyertalk.com that could be an additional source referenced by wiki?

This is actually a good idea - well not the fabrication of data - but why not use flyertalk and/or this forum as your data? You could quite easily run a search for words such as "jetstar" and "business", "jetstar" and "starclass", etc. Obviously the data may be a little skewed due to the abnormal population using this site, but at least the data aren't contrived.

The Qantas investor site provides monthly traffic stats broken up by the various Airline groups, QF Dom/Intl, J* dom/Intl. They even give a little line at the bottom that tells you the total no. of passengers that are Frequent Flyer members. What they don't do is to give you the breakup between leisure and business. As I mentioned before if this information was available its very commercially sensitive. However the more I think about it, the more I reckon they simply don't know this, other than some anecdotal or empirical measure. There is no box to tick that asks is this travel for business or leisure (unlike some hire car companies!). I suspect travel agents would rarely ask, although if you could somehow get numbers booked by Qantas Business Travel, that may assist. this site also proves you can't simply assume everyone in J or F is flying for business either.

The Data Book, and annual reports both state that Qantas targets business and leisure, while Jetstar targets leisure, so you could be a real slacker and just use (Total Jetstar/Total Qantas Group) as the percentage of leisure travellers.

I'm about to fly Jetstar for the very first time ever, in business to HNL. Not really looking forward to it But what QF charge for J on that route is ridiculous.

I don't think we are doing this the right way. Firstly, decide on what you want the answer you want to be. Only after that, you can go find/twist/fabricate things as required.

I have actually seen a 37% increase in people self funding J travel on LCC style carriers - pax who ordinarily would fly J for Business through company funded travel and historically due the lack of affordable premium travel would have flown in whY. I forecast a 73% increase in this style of travel as these groups age into their middle years before retirement and thus have greater disposable income as the mortgage repayments decline as a % of disposable income (assuming no increase in property size as children leave home). Those same individuals are less likely to change vehicles as frequently (lower propensity for best and newest) and no longer have to fund children on vacation thus a family vacation for four to HNL in whY becomes a couple's vacation to HNL in LCC J (Jlite) that also assists in funding cheaper overseas purchases of clothing and consumer goods which further offsets the cost of the trip.

Aside from the % I would challenge most people to challenge the factual accuracy of the above.

Sounds convincing, are you talking age groups 50-60yo? If so - they may still working - and throwing $$ into superannuation as fast as they can, if already retired they have seen their super balances go backwards/dissappear since 2008. If the AUD starts to drop they won't be going overseas as much or will be doing it in Y.
