Ta. I have SMTP details in the phone as standard. But I'll double check all the settings to make sure.

I assume you are using Bigpond, they require the SMTP authentication when off network.

If you are accessing the internet via another Internet Service Provider (ISP), but want to send email through our outgoing mail server using your BigPond email address, then you must activate SMTP authentication.

Make sure that you have adjusted the outgoing port settings as listed below, or configure your mail client so that it uses the service provider's SMTP server, with SMTP Authentication disabled. If you are uncertain on what this is, you can usually search for this online, or alternatively contact the service provider that is providing your internet access.

If you are uncertain which mail platform you are on, you can confirm this by logging in here https://signon.bigpond.com/login?site=chw&goto=http://messaging.bigpond.com/update/status.do

The complete list of email settings (including IMAP for Outlook.com accounts) can be found here http://go.telstra.com.au/helpandsupport/-/email-settings

When I'm overseas and on a local wifi network using my iPhone/iPad and I attempt to reply to an Outlook (POP) email, I get a message along the lines of: 'Can't accept relayed mail' and it fails to send.

In those circumstances, I either use my iCloud IMAP email account to generate a new message or activate roaming and reply from Outlook.

Are you saying that if I activate SMTP authentication in the Outlook settings on my desktop, that this sets the appropriate conditions on the Bigpond server for outgoing mail relayed from a hotel server to be sent? Or do I need to make some changes on my iPhone/iPad?

Yes, activate SMTP authentication for your outgoing bigpond server and it will work.

Brilliant! Thanks Mark. Years of frustration in automatically hitting 'reply' and composing a message only to have the doh! moment when it would not send will now disappear.

I believe the Bigpond SMTP settings to use the Bigpond outgoing server (which since getting more closely in to bed with Microsoft could mean Outgoing smtp server = smtp.live.com) plus a tick in the box for "Outgoing server requires authentication" with the option "use the same as my incoming mail server" will normally do the trick.

The settings are in the link I posted, ie Server Address mail.bigpond.com or smtp-mail.outlook.com or smtp-mail.outlook.com

The key is to tick the authentication box which is not the default setup. They put this control in place to prevent spam relay.

I only mentioned live.com because Dad's ADSL account email account was migrated by Telstra a while back and none of the bigpond servers worked. I finished up having to move the folks to Gmail when Telstra were unable to sort out why the bigpond mail stopped working both ways.

Watched The Monuments Men on a flight to CDG a couple of days ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.

It is a movie I can recommend for everyone

All good, the big T are a tad behind the times.

Slight up date, I was using port 25, the settings for mail.bigpond.com recommend 465. So update required there, but now verification of the settings is taking forever. not that important.

You know those automatic feedback things that you fill out knowing that nobody ever reads or follows up on them?

yeah its not obvious - all you need to do is go to the payment screen before renewal and put the code in.

It feels like more is needed, but that's it.

The code will be automatically taken into account upon renewal.

I had a similar query myself way back.

Beware the dark side of MKR The dark side of My Kitchen Rules: Kelly Ramsay reveals she’s broke and has been bullied since show’s finale | News.com.au

Pretty sure the girls were not pushed to say what they said at times, its clearly MKRs fault that the money for the wedding in NY is not coming in, hard times.

Don't have much empathy for K&C.

Big deal.

All contestants who enter this competition (and indeed, many other reality TV shows) know that they will be removed from the world for quite some time. This has had the side effect that many contestants are forced to leave their jobs, with the risk that they can't get back into the workforce easily thereafter.

Although reality TV will seem to be edited so as to make one look "bad", I wonder what reality TV does to force one to say something which is bad. Maybe the producers made people say certain things - maybe they are not in character - but obviously she must have said enough bad stuff for the network to profitably edit enough to only show that side.

One could similarly talk about A&S from Season 4 of the same show. As far as I know, no death threats necessarily issued, unless they simply don't make the news like this one does.

The media can be a real ***** - it begs to reason not to give them further fodder to be more so.

Ahhh ... that may be why I can't send bigpond emails with outlook when tethering Via Optus/Virgin mobile.

Indeed, however a lot of hotels tend to block port 25 so having authentication is no good as the request won't get there. Personally my outgoing mail is encrypted using an SSL connection and hotels that block port 25 do not block 465 which my SSL traffic is going out over - assuming your mail server supports it.

Glad I had the airconditioning installed.

It is really cold at nights and at least it is keeping a very small part of the room warm.

Dans will be busy today.....
