If you spend much time around the blogs and message boards, you could be forgiven for thinking that the world may spin off its axis if you don’t dedicate half your life to collecting credit card bonuses, gift cards, and running every bottle of aspirin you buy through an online shopping portal of some sort. These are, of course, great ways to earn miles and points that can enable you to travel for “free” or at prices you can afford. They can also consume your life if you let them. Don’t.

Great advice and a breath of fresh air, especially if you do read blogs or FF forums (like FT, VFT, MP, etc.). You could equally apply the same thing to the pursuit of status, "always" ensuring you have lounge access or flying up the front.

Life is too complex and not everyone's travel goals are the same.

My objective is to travel overseas 7-8 times a year. I want to be able to stretch my budget as far as I can but maintain relative comfort. Which means no LCCs and no hostels.

I spend the majority of my spare time looking for deals and if airfares stay low I will largely achieve my goals. This year there are 5 overseas trips and next year there will be 6 overseas trips.

This is very true. I think those who enjoy the pursuit of points, rebates, etc possibly do so largely as part hobby, with the financial rewards the icing on the cake. I do chase points to a small degree, but really, most times I couldn't be bothered (especially with the likes of adding time and hassle to a booking to gain a 3% rebate ). In the big scheme of things, provided people are happy with the "chase", I don't see much harm in it provided it doesn't become all consuming and effect happiness and family life and I must admit, it can at times be fun and rewarding!

A lot of the time, the best lurks and perks are not widely advertised and that is where forums like this are very handy. A large number of these do not actually cost any more time or money either (or that is what I tell myself anyway). Information is King.....
