Wine Glasses, Decanters etc

All very well to purchase these fabulous and not so fabulous wines - but then how do we consume them?

Over last week or so seems the 'Wine Glass Smashing Gods' have taken a serious set against the Cruiser household - so we must replace and replace quickly.

Might I pose a couple of questions to solicit the thoughts of the learned AFF community?

1. General recommendations of your preferred wine consumption apparatii / apparatuses? Style? Brand? Where you purchased? Cost if you can remember?

2. Is it sacrilege to consume wine from stemless glasses or is that now acceptable and sensible? Again your personal thoughts please?

3. Your thoughts on decanters? Style / brands / prices etc?

I actually had a quick look in both David Jones and Myer this morn in Southland - staff in both told me that stemless glasses are clearly outselling stemmed glasses recently - that surprised me a bit.

Hopefully the use of stemless glasses is just a phase, and stem glasses will get back on their feet.

A new trend? It was a new trend about 5 or more years ago and I thought it had become an old trend now. I knew of at least one trendy PER restaurant that had them when it first opened, but ditched them some time ago. Maybe the wheel is turning full circle.

My apologies, a relatively new trend
Some new innovations are better then others, like Riedel's new champagne glass. I like it but the missus doesn't let me replace the flutes just yet.

We've had them for around 5 years ... will be replacing them for a stumpy stem we liked handling during our recent London stay.

I quite like stemless but I dont own any (except the Riedel champagne glasses used in VAi J).

Loving my new Riedel Overture Magnums and they had a 20% off sale recently. Otherwise I think all glasses are pretty much the same. I dont prescribe to the glasses for certain wines nonsense (except champagne of course).

I have a Marquis decanter, one thats wide at the bottom. Does a great job with the wine but does take up a bit of space.

The main issue with stemless is the heat transfer from your hand to the wine. Also, not as easy to swirl. However, I'd rather have a stemless glass with a decent sized bowl than the other way around. I think part of the popularity of stemless, if that they easily fit in a dishwasher.

My favourite brand is now Zalto for wine glasses. Not cheap at roughly $50/glass, but certainly better value than Riedel. They are lead free crystal and can go in the dish washer. They are amazingly light and feel much more fragile than they really are.

As for decanters, mine are a bunch of no named brands and varying shapes. I tend to decant most my wine either to let it breath or for sediment (or both). As nice as some of those $800 Riedel crystal decanters might look, I have other things I'd rather spend my money on. I would love to get my hands on some laboratory beakers to use as decanters actually.

Innocent Bystander have an awesome flask decanter that you can buy; we're going to grab one next time we're out there...

Only 1 litre. How do you fit a magnum in?

Decanting - does anybody actually hyperdecant? I was in the market for a decanter but if I can make use of our existing blender thats more money to the drink itself.

If you really want lab flasks I'm pretty sure anyone can buy from this company Livingstone International Healthcare, Laboratory, pharmac_, Medical Supplies Order Online - 2 litre about $14 plus GST - not sure about postage and handling

Interesting. Obviously, this deals with decanting for aeration, not for sediment. Also the two wines used in the test were pretty average wines, especially the Australian Merlot.

For under $50, you can pick up a nice looking, practical glass decanter. Looks much better on the dinner table than a blender jug

I simply don't understand the OP's problem.

Chateau cardboard and plastic cups for Mrs Ikara and me. But then again, we are pensioners!
