Millenium Hilton in Bangkok

The 1,000 QFF points posted for a stay at the Millenium Hilton in Bangkok end of June. Have not had a valid Hilton stay since then.

John, a little off topic, but do you have any comments about this hotel? I just booked an award stay there for next year.

Absolutely loved it. As a HHonors gold I got upgraded to a huge room on the executive floor with lounge access and breakfast. Lovely, breathtaking, views of Bangkok for evening drinks and overall service is very good. I do not mind that it is on the other side of the river and it takes the same time and roughly the same taxi fare to get to the airport in a meter taxi as it does from Silom or even Sukhumvit.

I would echo these comments. As much as I despised Thailand I loved this hotel. The view from the exec lounge (we paid for a suite) was stunning (apart from the guys cleaning the windows at 20+ storeys without any safety gear).

+1 - I have stayed there three times now as a Gold and was upgraded to Exec level each time; great view, service, lounge, breakfast (even an egg chef).

Jenny and I are staying there in April; not mucking around looking for an upgrade, I have booked exec room directly!

Thanks guys. Unfortunately we are unlikely to get exec floor/lounge access. My days as a Diamond are long gone and currently Silver and dropping. But at 125K points for 5 nights, I thought it was reasonable value. Sounds like a god place to burn some HH points.

It is located on the west bank Chao Prao River.

Transport is easy; for eastern side you take the complimentary hotel ferry to River City and catch a cab from the Sheraton, or there's another complimentary ferry taking you to/from the Taksin Wharf and the BTS rail station.

As this will be my first time in Bangkok, and spending a few days there with Mrs NM, what are some of the must-dos and must-sees? Any suggestions on good places to eat, shop etc?

I echo all of the above.A pity you wont have lounge access as it really is one of the highlights.The spa is quite reasonably priced-certainly higher than you could get outside of a western hotel but mrsdrron says the service is very good.
For transport we always take the ferry to the BTS station-very easy and you wont get caught in Bangkok traffic as you very well might if you take a taxi.For a good thai restaurant we often go to the Blue elephant-I think 1 stop on the BTS from the river.The new shopping complexes near Siam Square have a great array of eating places if anyone is a bit squeamish.However if you like street food there are small centres either side from the taxi entrance to the Millenium.The little market to the left as you look at the river is interesting though a little crowded.
Personally for leisure i think the river is the best place to stay.We will be having our 16th stay in Bkk in december split between the Westin and the Millenium.Will write a report and hopefully worked out how to incorporate photos by then.

Always recommended is a visit to Ayutthaya. Take a coach on the way up and a river cruise on the way back. Or you can do the usual touristy stuff in Bangkok like the palaces, wats, floating market etc.

As for places to eat try the Londoner Pub underneath the Novotel Lotus on Sukhumvit Rd or even the Irish Pub across the road. They are located close to Phrom Phong BTS station on the Mo Chit - On Nut line.

I enjoy eating at Foodland on Sukhumvit Soi 5, not quiet a restaurant but very good food prepared in front of your eyes. I think it is called Tok Lae De.

Thanks guys. Its a long way off yet. Booked last weekend to get the flights as I was looking for first class award tickets. Its for our 20th wedding anniversary so early planning was warranted .

Closer to the time I might look at the cost to cancel the HH award stay and book an exec floor room. Will likely depend on what the exchange rate is doing at the time.

Will also be staying in KL and tossing up between an award stay at CP, paid club room at CP or paid Club room at Renaissance (west wing). Its a shame you can't use HH or PC points for a club room award redemption.

I always recommend a visit to The Dome and since this trip will be a very special occasion (an advance congrats is in order) then a candlelit dinner at the rooftop Sirrocco Restaurant is a must. Service is top notch, food is very good, prices are steepish relative to Thailand in general, but the ambience is what blows people away. 64floors above bustling Bankok and with views as far as your eyes can see. Go there just before sunset! Well worth it.

Go to 'Soi Arab' - Sukhumvit Road Soi 3. Great area full of tasty middle-eastern restaurants. The whole area makes you feel like you're in Istanbul or Dubai. Al Hussein is a very popular place to eat there (very reasonable) but there are some more expensive places to. Quite a few of the restaurants have hookahs for you to smoke to.

The Dome is definitely worth a visit. I stayed at the Lebua early this year and ate and drank at Distil and the rooftop bar. All the restaurants in this building are well regarded and it's definitely a good place to go for your first night (the view etc...).

Also, I think it's great to be on the other side of the river because you get a great view of the city. I stayed at the Peninsula a few years ago and the view of the river and the city was amazing.

I have to say Millenium Hilton is a very nice hotel. I would stay under any other circumstances. I have only used it for "mileage runs" (to keep my HH Gold when I needed an extra "stay", so packed my suitcases and moved there for one night"). Automatic upgrade, nice rooms, but never got to experience lounge or food since value my sleep too much.

In BKK I always stay at Conrad. It is just right. Cannot describe it any other way. Amasing service, unobtrusive yet meticulous. Never had a complaint. Great food, great exec lounge, great rooms. They even remember which fruit I do not like in my complimentary fruit basket, and which colour silk elephant they gave me previous time - they rotate them, even though my daughter already has 3 complete sets.

If the points allow you should experience it. IMHO the rooms are a little more personal

Unfortunately the Conrad is showing as unavailable for redemptions for the time I will be there. The Hilton is 25K/night and Conrad is 40K per night. I would need to supplement my HH balance to stay at the Conrad, but that is quite possible. I will keep checking availability as its quite possible they have not loaded anything this far out.

The Conrad is very nice, no doubt about it! Although I think the Hilton is more of a family hotel, and nicer being on the river.

Will be arriving BKK Hilton on Wednesday on our way to coughet (surprise trip .... for our anniversary also, telling my wife tonight) and on the way back! Looking forward to the stays there, it is always very comfortable and pleasant.

If you are looking for a cheap fine dining experience in Bangkok, I cannot recommend Le Normandie restaurant at the famous Mandarin Oriental Hotel enough, fantastic location, view and atmosphere, and the best bit is weekday lunch is only 1050THB for a truly world class 3 course meal, which is very cheap for what you get. Only ever had lunch here (great to take clients), and I would expect dinner would be expensive.

There is also a day trip I would highly recommend, that might educate your kids if they are of suitable age. Take a trip up to Kanchanaburi (Bridge over the river Kwai), there is a huge memorial garden for Australian diggers that we found quite moving, war museums and the bridge itself. Well worth it IMHO.
