Fiji Airways slams 'aggressive' Qantas

Fiji Airways has slammed Qantas for an “aggressive” move to expand direct flights to Fiji, saying the decision could hurt the Fijian economy.

despite QF being the largest shareholder after Fiji govt, they don't seem to agree on much.

It seems to me, that QF flying SYD/NAN in peak season makes a lot of sense, with 2 x 737 max's of FJ out grounded & only replaced by 1 x 738 wet leased. But why would QF compete with FJ in low season ? That's just nuts.

surely it would be better for FJ to wet lease a Qantas aircraft instead of going to Miami air or Malindo ?

QF and VA have some of the highest EBITA numbers per 737 in the world on the domestic market. With such a valuable asset being leased away they could probably lease multiple 737s from a bottom feeder like the Lion group for the same price as one from QF or VA.

2 things

1. domestic business travel plummets in Dec-Jan, although leisure travel increases dramatically, so yields prob drop a lot

2. some people don't want to fly on a malindo aircraft or miami air who recently took a 737 for a swim

Guess Fiji air is far mroe important to fiji economy than qantas is to our economy

Haven’t been to Fiji yet but I’m not flying on a narrow body aircraft get there. Might wait until after the new FJ A350 starts in Jan. First views look very sleek.

where was that photo taken ? Seems a long lead time from now, until start of January when it does daily SYD/NAN & continues onto LAX 6 days a week.

OOPS - just realised that A350 has no engines yet, so might be a while before it leaves France.

Fiji is not cheap in end of year school holidays. Looked at Denarau for a week January 5-12.

Cheapest AU$1856 & then $2 to $2.8k for 7 nights. That's aud$265 to au$400/night. There are cheap hotels in Nadi/near airport, but some need a bulldozer (too far gone to renovate - have unfortunately stayed in some on overnight)

Guess if some get ff seats, they maybe willing to pay more for accom. ?

guess yields will drop on Fiji air. Fiji air are short at least 1 x 737 until max's are flying again. from some sale fares around, it might only cost $200 more to fly SYD/NAN/SFO return, than SYD/NAN return.

According to Wiki

• Fiji air owns significant stakes in the hotel industry
• Fiji only owns 51% of the airline

I would have thought more people on the ground in Fiji buying food, renting cars and hotel rooms etc would help their overall economy more than the loss of a few fares on their airline of which they only own 51% anyway.

Given QF has a market share of only 18.2% of Int traffic in / out of Australia, one could argue that more competition/flights/BOS could be good for Fiji. Having more of these things certainly hasn't hurt Australian tourism.
